Export a Claude chat to Markdown
One clean .md file with the whole conversation — both sides, in order, with code fences, tables and artifacts — ready for Obsidian, Notion, GitHub or a notes folder.
How to export a Claude chat to Markdown
- Install DocMyChat for Chrome.
- Open the chat on claude.ai and click Export next to Share.
- Choose Markdown. The .md file downloads at once.
Markdown export is always free.
Why not copy each reply?
Claude’s Copy button gives you Markdown, but only for one reply and without your side of the conversation. A chat of twenty turns means forty copy-pastes, and you still have to label who said what. Artifacts — the code and documents Claude wrote in the side panel — don’t come along at all.
The export gives you the conversation as one file: a title, then each turn under a You or Claude heading, then an appendix with every artifact in its final version.
What the file looks like
# Speeding up a Python CSV parser

## You
My script parses sales.csv (2 GB) and takes 40 minutes. Why so slow?
## Claude
There are three bottlenecks:
1. `csv.DictReader` builds a dict for every row.
…
- Code keeps its fences and language tags, so syntax highlighting works in any editor.
- Formulas stay as LaTeX between
$signs — the form Obsidian, Notion and GitHub render. - Tables stay GitHub-flavored Markdown tables.
- Artifacts go to an appendix at the end, each in a code fence of the right language.
- Images are linked rather than embedded, so the file stays plain text. The links open while you are signed in to claude.ai.
Using it in Obsidian, Notion and GitHub
Obsidian: drop the file into your vault. Headings for each turn show up in the outline, and formulas render with Obsidian’s built-in math support.
Notion: use Import → Text & Markdown, or drag the file onto a page. Notion turns the headings, lists, tables and code into blocks.
GitHub: commit it next to the code it explains. GitHub renders the tables, code and math in the file view.
Include Claude’s thinking
Turn on Include Claude’s thinking in the export menu to keep Claude’s reasoning. In Markdown it appears as a quoted block before the answer, so it is easy to fold away or delete.
Questions
Is Markdown export free?
Yes. Markdown, Copy for Google Docs and artifact downloads are always free.
Does the export include my messages too?
Yes — both sides of the conversation, in order, under You and Claude headings.
Can I export Claude Code sessions?
No. DocMyChat works with chats on claude.ai in Chrome. Claude Code keeps its own session history on your machine.
