If you have ever tried to keep a good conversation with Claude — a research thread, a plan, a long debugging session — you have probably found that claude.ai can export the documents Claude creates, but not the conversation itself. Here is every way to get a chat out, what each one actually produces, and when to use it.
The short version
| Method | You get | Whole chat | Formatting | Artifacts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Copy button | Markdown text of one reply | No | As Markdown symbols | No |
| Share link | A read-only web page | Yes, as a snapshot | Yes, online | Yes, online |
| Print the page | A printout of the web app | Partly | Mixed with the interface | No |
| Data export | An archive of your whole account | All chats | No — raw data | As data |
| DocMyChat | PDF, Word, Markdown or a .zip | Yes, or one reply | Yes | Yes |
1. The Copy button
Every Claude reply has a Copy button underneath it. It copies that one reply as Markdown — the plain-text format Claude writes in. Paste it into a Markdown editor and it looks right. Paste it into Word, Google Docs or an email and you see the symbols: ** around bold words, # before headings, and formulas as LaTeX source.
Use it for: grabbing one answer to paste into a Markdown tool. Not for: keeping a conversation, since your own messages and the artifacts aren’t included.
2. A share link
The Share button at the top of a chat creates a link to a read-only snapshot of the conversation as it is now. On Free, Pro, Max and Ultra plans the link can be public — anyone who has it can read the chat without a Claude account. On Team and Enterprise plans chats can be shared only inside the organization.
A snapshot isn’t a file. It lives on claude.ai, needs an internet connection, leaves out the files you attached, and stops working if you turn sharing off or delete the chat. Read more in how to share a Claude chat.
Use it for: showing a chat to a colleague. Not for: an archive, a deliverable or anything you need offline.
3. Printing the page
Pressing Ctrl + P (⌘ + P on a Mac) on claude.ai prints the web app as it is laid out on screen. The sidebar and controls come along, the conversation is squeezed into the page, and artifacts open in the side panel aren’t part of the printout.
Use it for: a quick paper copy of a short chat. Not for: anything you will send to someone.
4. The official data export
In Settings → Privacy on the web or desktop app there is an Export data button. Claude prepares an archive of your conversations and account data and emails you a download link. The link works only while you are signed in and expires after 24 hours. Exports can’t be started from the iOS or Android apps, and on Team and Enterprise plans an owner has to allow members to export their own data.
What arrives is data meant for machines: every chat you have ever had, in files you would need a program to read comfortably. It is the right tool for a backup or for leaving the service, and the wrong one for sending a single conversation to a client. There is a step-by-step walkthrough in how to export your Claude chat history.
5. An export extension
A browser extension can read the conversation you have open and turn it into a real file. That is what DocMyChat does: it adds an Export button next to Share and an icon under every reply, and produces:
- a PDF with page numbers, typeset formulas and highlighted code;
- a Word document with editable equations;
- a Markdown file with both sides of the conversation;
- formatted text for Google Docs or Notion;
- a .zip of every artifact in its latest version.
The document is built in your browser from the chat claude.ai already shows you, so nothing is uploaded.
Which one should you use?
- To send a chat to someone who will read it: a PDF.
- To keep working on what Claude wrote: Word, or Google Docs via Copy.
- To keep notes in Obsidian, Notion or a repository: Markdown.
- To get the code out: the artifacts .zip.
- To back up everything, or leave Claude: the official data export.
- To show a chat to a teammate right now: a share link.
Questions
Can you export a Claude chat to PDF?
Not from claude.ai itself — Claude exports Docs artifacts to PDF, but not conversations. Printing the page works poorly; an extension like DocMyChat produces a proper PDF. See Claude to PDF.
Can I export a chat from the Claude mobile app?
Not as a file. Claude’s data export can’t be started from the iOS or Android apps, and browser extensions run only on a computer. Open the chat on claude.ai in Chrome instead.
Can I move a chat to another Claude account?
No. Claude’s data export can’t be imported into another personal account. You can keep the conversation as a document and paste the relevant parts into a new chat.
