Request the export
- Open claude.ai in a browser or the Claude desktop app and sign in.
- Go to Settings → Privacy.
- Click Export data.
- Wait for the email. Preparing the archive takes a little while.
- Open the link in the email while signed in to Claude and download the archive. The link expires after 24 hours; if you miss it, request a new export.
Who can export
- Free, Pro, Max and Ultra accounts can export their own data from Settings.
- Team and Enterprise members can export only their own chats, and only if an owner has turned on Allow members to export their own data. These exports don’t include the contents of uploaded files.
- Primary Owners of an organization export the whole organization’s data from Organization settings → Data and privacy instead.
- The iOS and Android apps can’t start an export. Use a computer.
What you get
The archive holds your conversation data and account data — all of it, not a chat you pick. It is structured data rather than formatted documents: good for a backup, for searching with a script, or for moving your history into another tool, but not something you would forward to a colleague or print.
Two limits matter. The export can’t be imported into another personal Claude account, so it is not a way to merge accounts. And it is a snapshot: chats you have afterwards need another export.
When you only need one chat
Most of the time the goal isn’t your entire history — it’s this conversation, as something readable. For that the account export is the long way round: you wait for an email, download everything, then dig the chat out of the data.
A browser extension does it from the chat itself. With DocMyChat, open the conversation on claude.ai, click Export next to Share and pick PDF, Word or Markdown. The file is ready in seconds, laid out as a document, with the artifacts at the end.
A sensible backup routine
- Request the account export every few months, or before you change plans or close the account. Keep the archive somewhere private — it contains everything you have discussed.
- Export important individual chats as PDF or Markdown when you finish them, so they sit next to the project they belong to, readable without any tool.
Questions
How long does the Claude data export take?
Claude emails the link once the archive is ready; Anthropic describes it as a small delay. The link then stays valid for 24 hours.
Does the export include files I uploaded?
For Team and Enterprise members, uploaded file contents are not included. Keep your own copies of important files either way.
Can I export my Claude history from my phone?
No. Exports can’t be run from the iOS or Android apps — use claude.ai in a browser or the desktop app.
