Export Claude chats to Word

An editable .docx with real headings, lists and tables, highlighted code, the images Claude made — and equations Word treats as equations, not text.

How to export a Claude chat to Word

  1. Install DocMyChat for Chrome.
  2. Open the chat on claude.ai and click Export next to Share — or the export icon under a single reply.
  3. Choose Word. A .docx file downloads straight away, named after the chat and the date.
  4. Open it in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs.

What goes wrong when you paste into Word

Claude writes in Markdown. Its Copy button hands you that Markdown, and Word doesn’t speak it: headings arrive as lines starting with ##, bold text sits between asterisks, and a formula turns into a string like \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}. Cleaning that up by hand takes longer than the answer took to write.

DocMyChat converts the Markdown into Word’s own structure before the file is written. Headings use Word’s heading styles, so the navigation pane and a table of contents work. Lists are real lists. Tables are real tables.

Equations you can edit

This is the part most converters skip. Every formula Claude wrote — inline or on its own line — becomes a native Word equation. Click it and Word’s equation editor opens; change an exponent, add a term, renumber it. Nothing is a picture.

For homework, papers and technical reports this is the difference between a draft you can finish in Word and one you have to retype.

What else is in the .docx

  • Code blocks in a monospaced font with syntax colors, ready to paste back into an editor.
  • Images and charts from the chat, placed where they appeared. SVG graphics are converted to sharp PNGs, because Word handles those everywhere.
  • Mermaid diagrams drawn as pictures.
  • Artifacts in an appendix at the end: the code and documents Claude wrote, latest versions.
  • Labels for each turn — You and Claude — and a title block with the date, model and a link back to the chat.

Word or Google Docs?

If you write in Google Docs, you have two routes. Upload the .docx to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs, which converts Word equations into its own equation format. Or use Copy for Google Docs and paste straight into a document, which is faster but keeps formulas as LaTeX text.

Export one reply to Word

For a single answer — a cover letter, a lesson plan, a summary — use the icon under that reply. The document then holds only that reply, so there is nothing to delete before you send it.

Questions

Which versions of Word open the file?

Any version that opens .docx — Word 2010 and later on Windows and Mac, Word on the web, LibreOffice and Google Docs.

Are the equations editable in Word?

Yes. They are written as native Office Math, the same format Word’s own equation editor uses. See how this works.

Can I convert a copied Claude reply to Word without the extension?

Yes — paste it into our free Claude Markdown to Word converter. It uses the same engine as the extension and runs in your browser.

Is my chat uploaded anywhere to make the file?

No. The .docx is assembled on your computer and saved through your browser’s downloads.
