How to get Claude’s math into Word as real equations

Paste a Claude answer into Word and the formulas turn into LaTeX code. Here is why, and three ways to end up with equations Word can actually edit.

Why formulas paste as code

Claude writes math in LaTeX, the notation scientists have typed formulas in for decades. On claude.ai the page renders it, so you see a neat fraction. Underneath, the reply contains something like:

$$x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}$$

Claude’s Copy button copies that source. Word doesn’t read LaTeX in pasted text, so the dollar signs and backslashes land in your document as they are. Word’s own equations use a different format, Office Math, and that is what you need to end up with.

Option 1: export the chat to Word

DocMyChat’s Word export converts every formula in the chat to Office Math while it builds the .docx. Inline formulas stay inline, display formulas sit centered on their own line, and each one opens in Word’s equation editor when you click it.

  1. Open the chat on claude.ai and click Export — or the icon under one reply.
  2. Choose Word.
  3. Open the .docx. Every equation is editable.

This is the fastest route when there is more than a formula or two, because the text, lists, tables and code around them come out formatted as well.

Option 2: paste into a converter

If you already copied the reply, paste it into the free Claude Markdown to Word converter. It runs the same converter as the extension, in your browser, and gives you a .docx with real equations — nothing is uploaded.

Option 3: let Word convert one formula

Word in Microsoft 365 can read LaTeX itself, one equation at a time:

  1. Press Alt + = to insert an equation.
  2. On the Equation tab, choose LaTeX in the Conversions group.
  3. Paste the formula without the surrounding $ signs.
  4. Choose Convert → Current – Professional.

It works well for a single formula. For a whole answer it means repeating the steps for every equation and still fixing the text around them.

And Google Docs?

Google Docs doesn’t accept equations through the clipboard either. Export to Word, upload the .docx to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs — it converts Word equations into its own.

If you only need to read or print it

For a document that won’t be edited, export to PDF. Formulas are typeset as math in the PDF, sharp at any size.

Questions

Why does Claude use LaTeX?

LaTeX is the standard way to write mathematics as plain text, so it is how language models like Claude write formulas. claude.ai renders it on screen.

Will the equations work in older Word versions?

The .docx uses Office Math, which Word has supported since Word 2007. Word on the web and LibreOffice open it too.

Does this work for chemistry or matrices?

Fractions, roots, sums, integrals, matrices, Greek letters and accents convert. Very specialized LaTeX packages may not; those formulas stay readable as text.
