How to share a Claude chat: link or file?

A share link is the quickest way to show someone a conversation. A file is what you send when it has to last. Here is how both work and when to choose which.

Open the chat and click Share at the top. Chats are private until you do. Claude offers two kinds of sharing.

Invite specific people

Inviting by email is the default. Only the addresses you enter can open the chat, and only while signed in with that email. They can read it, but they can’t reply in it or copy it.

Create a public link

A public link opens a read-only snapshot for anyone who has it — no Claude account needed. Public links are available on Free, Pro, Max and Ultra plans; on Team and Enterprise plans sharing stays inside the organization.

What a public link shows

  • The chat as it was when you shared it. Later messages stay private until you update the snapshot.
  • Artifacts created in the conversation.
  • Not your attachments. Files you uploaded are left out.

Viewers can’t continue the conversation, but anything they can see they can copy or screenshot. Shared pages ask search engines not to index them, though a link posted somewhere public can still spread.

Stop sharing

Turn the link off from the Share menu, or under Settings → Privacy → Shared chats. The link stops working immediately. Deleting the chat removes the snapshot too. Copies people already made aren’t affected.

When to send a file instead

A link depends on claude.ai, on your sharing settings and on the chat still existing. Send a document when:

  • It’s a deliverable — a report, a plan or an analysis for a client who shouldn’t need a Claude link.
  • It must last — research notes, decisions, anything you will want to find in a year.
  • It will be edited — a draft someone will revise in Word or Google Docs.
  • It goes offline — printed, attached to a ticket, filed with a project.
  • The chat is in a Team workspace and the reader is outside your organization.

With DocMyChat that file is one click away: PDF for reading, Word for editing, Markdown for notes.

Questions

Can people see my future messages after I share a chat?

No. A public link shows a snapshot. New messages stay private until you update the shared snapshot.

Can I send a Claude chat as a file from my phone?

Not with DocMyChat — it is a Chrome extension for computers. Open the chat on claude.ai in Chrome on your computer to export a PDF or Word file.

Do shared Claude chats show up on Google?

Shared chat pages tell search engines not to index them, and Anthropic doesn’t publish a list of them. A link posted on a public website can still be found by people who see it there.
