Save Claude conversations in OneNote
Paste text you want to revise, or keep a PDF when equations and page layout matter more than editing.
To move a chat from Claude to OneNote, paste it into a page or save a PDF and insert it as an attachment or printout. Use the desktop app for formatted paste. Choose PDF when the conversation has equations, charts, or tables whose layout you need to keep.
Paste into a desktop OneNote page
Choose Copy in DocMyChat for formatted text and Markdown on your clipboard. Use a blank page for the first paste.
- Open the chat on claude.ai in desktop Chrome with DocMyChat installed.
- Click Export next to Share.
- Choose Copy, labeled for Google Docs.
- Open a blank page in OneNote for Windows or Mac.
- Paste into the page body.
- Compare the pasted text with the conversation.
On Windows, Paste Options offers Keep Source Formatting, Merge Formatting, and Keep Text Only. Start with Keep Source Formatting if it’s available, then check headings, lists, and table cells. Microsoft’s advanced options guide explains those choices.
OneNote on the web drops formatting and table or list structure from external text. Use an attachment to avoid rebuilding a long answer.
Attach a PDF or insert its pages as a printout
An attachment keeps the PDF as a file you open from the note. A printout puts its pages inside the note for annotation. Choose an attachment for a compact page, or a printout to read beside your comments.
- Choose PDF from the conversation’s export menu.
- Wait for the preview and Chrome’s print dialog.
- Select Save as PDF.
- Save the file with a recognizable name.
- Insert it into OneNote with the command for your platform below.
See the PDF export guide for the preview and print settings. Turn off Headers and footers under More settings to remove Chrome’s extra page details.
| OneNote version | File attachment | PDF printout |
|---|---|---|
| Windows desktop | Insert → File Attachment | Insert → File Printout |
| Mac desktop | Insert → File | Insert → Insert file as PDF Printout, or the ribbon’s Printout control |
| Web | Insert File Attachment in the Insert ribbon | Open the notebook in the desktop app and use the steps above |
Printout pages aren’t editable note text. Keep the PDF itself when you need to share the conversation elsewhere.
Use Word when you need editable equations
Choose Word in DocMyChat to download a .docx, then attach it with your platform’s file command. Open it in Word to edit. The attachment won’t become OneNote paragraphs.
The export contains native, editable Word equations. See the Word export guide for the steps.
On Mac, Microsoft recommends creating complex equations in Word and copying them into OneNote. Copy one equation from the exported file first, then check how it looks and whether you can edit it. On Windows or the web, make the same check before transferring a whole derivation.
If a long derivation needs too many repairs after pasting, keep the PDF printout for reading and the Word file for editing. See Claude equations in Word for help with native equations.
Save a short passage without an extension
Copy a short passage from your browser into a new note. Put the question above the answer so you have the context when you return. For a meeting outline or a paragraph of notes, a little manual cleanup may be quicker than an export.
Paste a copied reply into the browser-based Markdown-to-PDF converter to make a document. Check the preview before attaching the PDF, especially equations and wide tables.
Check content before you file it
Check completeness as well as appearance. A tidy page can still lose a table row or the last sentence.
- Tables: compare headers, row counts, and units with the chat.
- Code: check indentation and line breaks. Attach the original script if you plan to run it.
- Images: open the chart or screenshot to check that you saved the image, rather than just its link.
- Equations: compare subscripts, fractions, and symbols with the source.
Add a short typed description so you can search for the topic without relying on OneNote to recognize a formula or screenshot.
Give the chat a notebook, section, and page
Use a project or course notebook, a section for the topic, and one page for each saved discussion. That follows OneNote’s notebook–section–page structure.
For a statistics explanation, use the “Methods” notebook, the “Regression” section, and a page called “Residual assumptions — 2026-11-02.” Start with your own question and the point you still need to check. Put the answer underneath, followed by the PDF or Word attachment.
Can Claude connect directly to OneNote?
Anthropic’s Microsoft 365 connector excludes OneNote as a readable file type. A notebook can appear in search results even though Claude can’t read it. Export the OneNote material to Word or PDF when you want Claude to use it.
DocMyChat saves a separate copy of your conversation. It doesn’t upload to a notebook or sync later replies automatically.
Questions
Can I search the text in an inserted PDF?
On Windows, OneNote supports searching image text and recognizing text in file printouts. Recognition can take time and make mistakes. Attaching a PDF as an icon doesn’t guarantee that every word will be searchable.
Does changing my downloaded file update the attachment?
No. An inserted attachment is a copy. Microsoft’s Mac guide says it doesn’t update when the original file changes, so replace the attachment when you save a new version.
Can I recover editable text from a printout?
OneNote for Windows offers Copy Text from this Page of the Printout and Copy Text from All the Pages of the Printout. Proofread the extracted words. OCR can misread code and mathematical notation.
