How to export a chat from the Claude desktop app

Request account data in Claude Desktop or save one synced conversation through Chrome.

Claude Desktop offers account data export from Settings → Privacy. To export a chat from the Claude desktop app as a PDF, Word document, or Markdown file, open the same ordinary conversation in Chrome on claude.ai. Your conversations sync when you’re signed in.

Start with the app’s own options

For a short excerpt, try selecting and copying the text. If the reply shows Copy, use it. Check the first and last lines and any table or code block after pasting. Add your question if the answer needs context.

For a link, look for Share on the chat. If it isn’t available in your app, open the conversation on the web. Claude’s sharing controls create a snapshot. Public links can be opened by anyone who has them, but uploaded files aren’t included. Team and Enterprise sharing stays inside the organization. The link-versus-file guide helps you choose.

To save something Claude created, open the artifact itself. Its controls include export options for newer documents and copy or download for legacy artifacts. Save the conversation separately for the questions and revisions.

Request account data without leaving Desktop

For a broader backup, open Settings → Privacy in Claude Desktop and click Export data. This also works on the web. The export includes conversation data and account information.

Claude emails a download link when it’s ready. Open it while signed in and download the export within 24 hours of delivery. Request another export if it expires.

On Team or Enterprise, an owner must enable member exports. Primary Owners use the organization export instead. If Export data is missing, ask an owner about that setting. The account-export guide covers permissions and scope. DocMyChat doesn’t process the downloaded archive.

Open the same conversation in Chrome

Open the original conversation while signed in to the same account. If you use both a personal account and a work organization, select the same workspace too.

  1. Open Google Chrome on your Mac or Windows computer.
  2. Go to claude.ai and sign in to the account used in the desktop app.
  3. Open the conversation from your history or its project.
  4. Compare its title and latest messages with the desktop conversation.
  5. Install DocMyChat in Chrome if you haven’t already.
  6. Click Export beside Share on the web chat.
  7. Choose Word, Markdown, or PDF.

After editing a prompt or retrying an answer, compare that exchange too. DocMyChat exports the branch currently shown on screen, so confirm the web version contains the answer you want. A matching title alone won’t tell you which answer you’re saving.

Word downloads a .docx file immediately. Markdown downloads a .md file. PDF opens a preview and Chrome’s print dialog, where you select Save as PDF. See the PDF guide for print settings.

DocMyChat runs in desktop Chrome on claude.ai, not inside Claude Desktop. To save only the finished answer, use the small export icon under that reply. The export-method comparison covers the other routes.

Keep local tasks and Code sessions separate

As of November 2026, Claude is combining chat and Cowork for accounts receiving the new experience. Older local tasks still need their own export.

For a Cowork task that says it runs only on this computer, use the desktop app. Anthropic’s Cowork guide gives two options: Download task data inside the task, or Export your Cowork data on the desktop home card. Use those controls to keep the local task’s data.

DocMyChat doesn’t export Claude Code sessions. Keep files Claude changed or created on your computer alongside the transcript, so the conversation isn’t your only record.

Example: save a supplier comparison

Suppose you compared three suppliers in Claude Desktop and need the discussion beside your purchasing notes. Open the same chat in Chrome, confirm the final recommendation is present, and export it as a PDF.

Compare the saved supplier table’s rows and headings with the conversation. Keep the original quotes separately. If you need to revise the recommendation, save a Word copy with a different name.

The exported document is a saved copy. Continue working in Desktop, then export again if later replies belong in the record.

Questions

Do I have to make the chat public to open it in Chrome?

No. Sign in to your own Claude account and open the original conversation. You don’t need a share link to switch between the app and the web.

Can I bookmark the web conversation for later exports?

Yes. Find the conversation on claude.ai in Chrome, then bookmark its private chat URL. Open that bookmark while signed in to return to the original chat.

How do I get a paper copy on Mac or Windows?

Use the PDF route in Chrome, then print the saved PDF. DocMyChat opens a document preview and Chrome’s print dialog.

Will interactive features still work in the saved file?

Interactive widgets can’t run in a document. DocMyChat marks where they appeared and tells you to open the chat to use them. Published Claude Docs and decks appear as titled links, without their content.
