How to save Claude’s thinking with an answer

Keep the displayed thinking with your working notes, or leave it out of a finished document. Choose the setting before you export.

To save Claude’s thinking with a reply or conversation, turn on Include Claude’s thinking in DocMyChat’s export menu, then choose PDF, Word, or Markdown. For a short excerpt, try selecting the displayed thinking and copying it into a note. Treat it as a record of the available summary, not the model’s full internal reasoning.

Open the thinking Claude shows

Thinking lets Claude work through a problem before answering. Expand Thinking above a response to read the summary, as Anthropic’s guide explains.

As of November 2026, the controls depend on the model. Open the model menu next to the send button and look under Effort for Thinking or Extended. Other models show Extended directly, and some always use thinking. Changes apply to the next reply.

The technical documentation distinguishes a thinking summary from the full internal process. If Claude says the rest of its thinking is unavailable, save the available portion with its answer and note the limit.

Copy a short excerpt without an extension

Start with the expanded section:

  1. Select the displayed text if your browser lets you select it.
  2. Copy the selection into an empty note.
  3. Compare the first and last lines with the section on screen.
  4. Add the prompt and relevant answer below it.
  5. Add the chat URL so you can return to the exchange.

If the reply has a Copy control, inspect the pasted content. If it lacks the thinking you wanted, try selecting that text from the expanded section.

Label the parts “Displayed thinking” and “Answer,” and keep your comments under a separate heading.

Include thinking in a saved chat or reply

DocMyChat runs on claude.ai in desktop Google Chrome. Its Include Claude’s thinking option is off by default, and the menu remembers your choice for the next export.

  1. Open the chat in Chrome with the extension installed.
  2. Click Export beside Share for the conversation, or the export icon under a reply for that answer.
  3. Turn on Include Claude’s thinking.
  4. Choose PDF, Word, or Markdown.
  5. For PDF, select Save as PDF in Chrome’s print dialog.
  6. Open the saved file and find the thinking before the corresponding answer.

Word downloads as .docx, and Markdown downloads as .md. PDF opens a preview and Chrome’s print dialog. The PDF walkthrough covers print settings.

Use a whole-chat export when earlier questions or corrections explain the decision. Choose a single-reply export for one useful response. Change the thinking option before making a later copy for someone else.

Recognize the thinking in the file

In PDF and Word, included thinking is set apart before the answer. Markdown uses a quote beginning with > **Thinking**. Here’s the layout with placeholder text:

> **Thinking**
>
> The displayed thinking summary goes here.

The answer follows here.

In a whole-chat Markdown export, the conversation uses ## You and ## Claude headings. A single-reply export has no turn heading. The Markdown format guide covers the rest.

Keep the quoted section intact in your reference copy. Label any extract as an excerpt and keep it connected to the answer.

Decide who needs the thinking

Include thinking in research notes when you want to revisit an approach, compare assumptions, or prepare questions for further checking. Read it alongside the answer and your evidence. A convincing explanation still needs checking.

For a client memo, leave it out unless the client needs the discussion behind the recommendation. Send the conclusion, supporting evidence, and any uncertainty that affects the decision.

For a classroom handout, leave thinking out unless students need it for the exercise. To compare approaches, include a labeled excerpt and explain what students should examine.

The research-record guide covers keeping source material and your assessment beside a saved chat.

Example: keep the investigation, send the fix

Suppose you’re debugging a CSV importer that counts some invoices twice. The chat considers repeated input rows and an incorrect matching rule, then recommends a change after you clarify the invoice identifier.

Save the conversation as Markdown with thinking included. Name it invoice-import_investigation.md. Keep your clarification, the available thinking, and the final answer together. In a separate note, record which test cases you ran and what they showed.

Then click the export icon under the final reply, turn Include Claude’s thinking off, and save a PDF for the client. Call it invoice-import_fix.pdf. Read that copy to make sure it contains the agreed explanation and any caveats the client needs.

If the final reply still discusses abandoned ideas, edit a Word working copy into the brief you intend to send. Keep the original conversation separately. The export option removes the separate thinking section, so review the answer itself too.

If the thinking is missing from your copy

Reopen the export menu and check that Include Claude’s thinking is on. Then compare the saved reply with the one you meant to export. Match the thinking section to its answer.

If the text is visible in Claude but missing from your file, try the manual selection steps above. Keep that excerpt with the matching answer and its prompt. If Claude itself shows no thinking text for the reply, save the answer and record that limit in your notes. Don’t fill the gap with a later explanation and label it as the original thinking.

Questions

Can I export only the thinking?

Save the reply as Word or Markdown with thinking included, then copy the thinking section into a separate document. Label it as an excerpt and keep the original export so you can return to the answer and its context.

Can I use this export setting in the Claude desktop app?

DocMyChat works on claude.ai in Google Chrome on a computer. It does not run in the Claude desktop app, on phones, or on tablets.

Which version is saved after I retry an answer?

The export follows the branch currently shown on screen. Open the version you want before saving. Keep separate files if you need to compare two attempts.

Will my file update when I ask another question?

No. The saved file does not sync with later messages. Export again when you want a copy containing the new exchange.
