- Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini
Exporting chats from Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini
Use a shared link to show a chat, an account export to keep broader data, and a document export for a finished output. Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini offer different routes for each.
To export a chat from Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini, decide what you need: a shared conversation, account data, or a document. All three offer native sharing and account export. Document tools save particular outputs, such as a Claude Doc, ChatGPT research report, or Gemini response.
Native options at a glance
| Assistant | Useful document route | Main distinction to check |
|---|---|---|
| Claude | A Doc’s Export menu | The Doc and its surrounding chat are separate |
| ChatGPT | Completed deep research report downloads | Personal snapshots and workspace links have different update rules |
| Gemini | Response or Canvas text to Google Docs | Takeout chat activity and Gems use different selectors |
Check the controls in your account, workspace, and app. A document download may save only the finished answer when you also need earlier prompts and revisions.
For a product proposal, save the final brief and chart for your manager. Keep the discussion to revisit its assumptions later.
Claude: distinguish the chat from the Doc
| Need | Native route to use or check | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Share a chat | Invitation or public link | View-only snapshot with audience restrictions |
| Export account data | Official data export | Conversation and account data, subject to your role |
| Save a full-chat file | Check for a conversation-level option | A Doc’s export does not save every chat turn |
| Export a document | A Claude Doc’s Export menu | Word, PDF, Markdown, or Google Docs |
An invited recipient must sign in with the invited account. Public links on individual plans let anyone with the URL view the snapshot. Team and Enterprise sharing stays inside the organization.
Public snapshots omit uploaded attachments. Update them to include later messages. The chat-sharing guide covers access choices. Keep a separate file for offline use.
Request account data on the web or Claude Desktop. Its emailed link requires the same signed-in account and expires 24 hours after delivery. Team and Enterprise members need an owner to enable exports, which exclude uploaded-file contents. Primary Owners use the organization export instead.
A Doc’s Export menu saves that document. Save prompts and revisions with a separate chat-saving method. Choose Claude’s native options for the Doc itself, an account record, or a shared snapshot with the right audience.
ChatGPT: check the workspace before sharing
| Need | Native route to use or check | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Share a chat | Personal or managed-workspace link | A snapshot or a workspace-accessible conversation |
| Export account data | Settings-based export for eligible accounts | ZIP with chats and relevant account data |
| Save a full-chat file | Check for a conversation-level option | A research-report download saves the report |
| Export a document | Completed deep research report download | Markdown, Word, or PDF |
Update personal shared links to include later messages. Workspace conversation links can include messages added after sharing and are restricted to eligible workspace members. OpenAI’s sharing guide explains these rules.
Read the sharing notice before adding private material to a shared workspace conversation. Check the whole preview: supported images and uploaded files can appear in shared chats.
Account export covers Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and eligible Edu workspaces. Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspaces use organization-managed data access instead. Delivery by email or SMS can take up to seven days. The download link expires after 24 hours.
On the web, open Settings > Data controls > Export data, choose Export, then choose Confirm export. Allow for that delay before a deadline.
For a completed deep research report, use the download described in OpenAI’s research guide. Check for prompts and replies if you also need the conversation. Choose the native download for the report, or account export for broader chat data.
Gemini: response export and Takeout do different jobs
| Need | Native route to use or check | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Share a chat | Public conversation link | A snapshot, subject to organization restrictions |
| Export account data | Google Takeout | Gemini Apps activity under My Activity |
| Save a full-chat file | Check for a conversation-level option | Exporting a response leaves out the surrounding discussion |
| Export a document | Response or Canvas export | Text to Docs, with other routes for Canvas slides and LaTeX |
Under a response, choose Share & export > Export to Docs to create a new document in Drive. Google’s instructions explain the options by app and Workspace settings. Use it to revise an answer, keeping the discussion separately when needed.
A Gemini public link can show uploaded images and generated artifacts. Later changes do not update the snapshot. Deleting relevant activity can remove the link, so download work you need to keep.
For chats in Google Takeout, select My Activity, open All activity data included, choose Deselect all, then select Gemini Apps. This includes chats, generated media, and uploads. The separate Gemini checkbox exports Gems, so selecting only that box misses chat activity.
Takeout offers ZIP or TGZ archives delivered by email or cloud storage. Use these for account data.
Canvas sends text to Google Docs and slides to Google Slides or PDF. Documents containing LaTeX can be previewed and downloaded as PDF. These controls save the Canvas item. Choose Gemini’s native exports for an answer in Docs, a Canvas document, or Takeout activity.
When native tools are the better choice
For a finished deliverable, export the Claude Doc, download the ChatGPT research report, or send the Gemini response to Docs. You can then skip assembling it again from the discussion.
Use account export for broader data and a shared link for an online handoff. Check permissions before promising either route to a colleague.
For work across all three, keep a private folder with files named for their contents: brief, transcript, or account data. Add the assistant’s name and date. Check the recommendation, supporting table, source URLs, and original files. Matching file extensions do not mean the files contain the same parts of your work.
Where DocMyChat fits
DocMyChat works on claude.ai in desktop Chrome. It saves one chat or reply as PDF, Word, or Markdown, offers formatted Copy, and downloads included artifacts and generated files as a ZIP of their newest versions. Word equations are native and editable. PDF uses Chrome’s print dialog.
The conversation export places titled links where Claude Docs and decks published as artifacts were created. Their contents are not included. Save those through Claude’s native controls. Slide HTML and JSON written only to build a published deck are left out of the appendix and ZIP.
The extension does not work with ChatGPT or Gemini. A ChatGPT version is planned, with no release date. The about page explains its scope.
Save the native Claude Doc as the brief, the conversation for context, and source files for reuse. The workflow is manual, without automatic backup or account migration. Choose the extension for a readable Claude chat or reply.
How we compared
We used official Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google guides for sharing, account data, and document exports. We publish DocMyChat and use our maintained product facts for its details. We did not test signed-in interfaces, compare downloaded samples, or measure export times.
Questions
Can I set a ChatGPT shared link to expire automatically?
No. OpenAI’s sharing guide says you cannot set an expiration date for a shared link. Delete the link when you want to stop making it available.
Does downloading Gemini data delete it from Google?
No. Your Gemini Apps activity stays on Google’s servers after you download it, according to Google’s download guide. Manage or delete the activity separately if that is your goal.
Can I export just a Gemini table to a spreadsheet?
Use Export to Sheets when that option appears. It creates a new spreadsheet in Google Drive, but tables containing images cannot use this route, according to Google’s response-export help.
