Claude for consultants: from chat to client document
Export the reply you need to Word, edit it for the client, and make the PDF from that reviewed file.
For a client deliverable, export the Claude reply to Word, edit it to your house style, and make the PDF from that reviewed document. Check the chosen answer for confidential details and internal notes before delivery.
Start with the reply the client needs
Working chats may include discarded recommendations, unchecked figures, and notes about approaching the client. Decide what you owe them: a finished answer, a process record, or both.
In desktop Chrome on claude.ai, DocMyChat’s export icon beneath each reply, beside Copy, saves that answer. The header’s Export button saves the open chat.
- Find the reply containing the intended deliverable.
- Read it through, including tables and footnotes.
- Click the export icon beneath that reply.
- Set Include Claude’s thinking and Include artifacts to match the agreed scope.
- Choose Word to download an editable document.
- Open the file to edit it for the client.
See the single-reply guide for this selection. Supply any requested transcript or account of AI use separately. Label a selected answer so nobody mistakes it for the full exchange.
A conversation export follows the displayed branch, leaving out alternatives from edited prompts or retried answers.
Edit the Word document to your house style
Word export gives you real heading styles, lists, and tables, plus editable equations when the answer contains math.
Check that the recommendation addresses the client’s decision. Verify figures, dates, names, and sources. State assumptions and distinguish proposed actions from approved ones.
Apply your house style in Word: title, heading hierarchy, fonts, cover details, and any required logo. The extension has no branding control.
Suppose a positioning memo came from a chat about your fee and delivery concerns. Keep the reviewed analysis and evidence, and check the memo’s introduction and recommendations for private planning details.
Save the edited master with a project name, such as client-positioning_v03.docx. Keep any initial export needed for internal records separately and label it to prevent accidental delivery.
Remove internal material from the delivery copy
Include Claude’s thinking is off by default, leaving out the optional thinking content. Read the answer itself for internal notes and confidential information.
Check for other clients’ names, private URLs, account details, draft pricing, and negotiating notes in the body, title, and metadata. The metadata date records the export, not the conversation. Keep required qualifications and agreed AI disclosures.
Include artifacts is on by default. Turn it off if the agreed deliverable does not need the appendix. Otherwise, check for working material absent from the main reply. Claude Docs and decks published as artifacts appear as titled links where they were created, without their contents. Save that material with a Doc’s own Export button or a deck’s native controls.
After editing, check comments, revisions, and document properties. Microsoft recommends running Document Inspector on a copy, because some removals cannot be undone. In Word for Windows, use File → Info → Check for Issues → Inspect Document. Word for Mac provides manual property controls instead.
Read the copy yourself too. The inspector cannot find every kind of hidden content or decide which business details belong in the client’s copy.
Make the PDF from the edited master
Use Word’s PDF saving option on the document you just reviewed. Exporting the reply from Claude again would leave out your Word edits.
If the reply needs no edits, choose PDF in the extension to open a preview and Chrome’s print dialog. Select Save as PDF. Under More settings, turn off Headers and footers if Chrome adds unwanted printing details. See the PDF export guide for that route.
Open the attachment and check page breaks, table rows, chart labels, and source links. Fix layout problems in the master and recreate the PDF. If the client needs to revise the wording, include the reviewed Word file or their requested editing format.
Match version names so comments on a PDF marked “v03” refer to the Word master marked “v03.”
Choose between a file and a chat link
Send a file for the reviewed document. Use a chat link when the client wants the conversation, after checking what the snapshot shows.
As of November 2026, Claude’s public links are available on Free, Pro, Max, and Ultra plans. Anyone with the URL can read the snapshot without an account. Later messages need an updated snapshot, attached files are excluded, and turning sharing off cannot recall copies already saved.
Sharing with specific people requires recipients to sign in with the invited email address. Chats are view only. Team and Enterprise sharing stays inside the organization, subject to administrator controls. Attached files are normally omitted, except when sharing within an organization.
See the sharing guide for access details.
Check where client files will go
DocMyChat builds the document in your browser. No DocMyChat server receives the chat. The extension reads only the chat being exported when its menu or popup opens, using your existing claude.ai session. See the privacy policy for that processing.
Follow the client agreement and your workplace rules before sending client material to Claude or sharing the saved file. Local export does not control your storage folders, their access settings, or which attachment reaches the client. Use your organization’s approved storage and delivery process.
Check who can open a team folder before putting a transcript there. Someone who needs the recommendation may not need the prompts, uploaded extracts, or internal discussion. Keep required project records in the appropriate location.
Check the delivery package
Review the files you are about to send:
- The document answers the brief and states remaining assumptions.
- Figures, dates, names, and cited evidence have been checked.
- Internal discussion and unrelated client material have been reviewed.
- Required disclosures and supporting attachments are present.
- The Word master and PDF contain the same version.
- Tables, formulas, charts, and links work in the saved copy.
- The filename, recipients, and delivery location match the project.
Keep the delivered version and delivery date so you can match later feedback to the right document.
Questions
Can I deliver Markdown to a client instead?
Yes, if you agreed on that format. Check the file before sending it, and supply needed images separately: Markdown image links require the recipient to sign in to claude.ai.
Can I make these exports from the Claude desktop app?
No. Open the conversation on claude.ai in desktop Google Chrome to use DocMyChat.
Can I combine several client chats in one export?
No. The extension saves one conversation or one reply at a time. Export the chats separately, then assemble the deliverable while keeping each client’s and project’s material separate.
Does sending a PDF prevent the recipient from editing it?
No. Microsoft’s PDF guidance says PDF alone does not prevent editing. Use it to give the client the intended reading layout, without assuming the contents cannot be changed.
