Claude for students: Keep the work you need

Use Markdown or PDF for study notes and Word for editable math. Keep a separate transcript when your course asks you to show how you used AI.

Save Claude study notes as Markdown or PDF and choose Word for problem sets with editable equations. If your instructor asks for a transcript, save the conversation separately from notes you edit. Follow the course’s rules on AI use, disclosure, and citation before adding anything to an assignment.

Choose a file for the next task

  • Markdown works for notes you reorganize in a text editor or notes app. Formulas stay as LaTeX for a compatible app to render.
  • PDF gives you a reading copy with typeset formulas and numbered pages. Use it for a transcript if your instructor accepts PDF.
  • Word lets you edit explanations and equations or combine the material with your own writing.

Keep a PDF of the original exchange and a Word file for working notes if you need both. Give them different names so you can tell the transcript from the edited copy.

Save a conversation or one useful answer

In Google Chrome on a computer, DocMyChat adds Export beside Share on claude.ai to save the open conversation. The small export icon under each Claude reply saves that answer alone.

  1. Open the chat you want to save.
  2. Check that the branch on screen contains the exchange you need.
  3. Click Export for the chat or the icon under the answer you want.
  4. Select Markdown, Word, or PDF.
  5. For PDF, choose Save as PDF in Chrome’s print dialog.
  6. Open the file and check the first and last messages and any formulas.

Word and Markdown download directly. PDF opens a preview and Chrome’s print dialog. Turn off Headers and footers under More settings to remove Chrome’s additions.

A single answer may be enough for a study sheet. Save the conversation when you need the questions and corrections too. The single-reply guide explains the reply controls.

Keep problem-set formulas editable

The Word file contains native Office Math equations, so you can change a fraction, exponent, or variable directly. It also has real headings, lists, and tables you can edit.

Suppose your course allows study chats and you used one to review the product rule. Export the explanation to Word, work through the derivative yourself, and add your check underneath. Label the parts you wrote.

Check the signs, brackets, units, and assumptions behind each step. Clear formatting helps you read the calculation, but it still needs checking.

With Copy into Google Docs, formulas arrive as LaTeX text. For equations you need to edit, follow the equations-to-Word walkthrough. If you only want a reading sheet, save a PDF.

Make study notes without rewriting the record

Keep study notes brief: the definition you checked, the example that helped, and a question you still can’t answer on your own.

Use a folder for each course and names such as calculus_product-rule_notes.md and calculus_product-rule_transcript.pdf. You organize the files yourself. The exporter saves one chat or one reply at a time.

In your study copy, add the textbook section or lecture page you used to check an explanation. Mark unchecked claims for follow-up so you don’t mistake them for verified facts.

Try the original problem again before reopening the explanation. Compare your answer with the saved one and note where your methods differ.

Prepare the transcript appendix your course requests

Check whether the assignment asks for a full exchange, selected material, or an explanation of your AI use. Cornell’s attribution guidance gives instructors several ways to ask for attribution when they allow AI. Your course’s rules decide what is permitted.

For a required full transcript, keep the prompts, answers, follow-up questions, and corrections. Don’t substitute Claude’s summary of the exchange. A summary is another generated answer, so it cannot replace the original record.

Use Export in the chat header to make a readable PDF transcript. After a prompt edit or retried answer, the export follows the branch on screen. It does not combine every alternative. Ask your instructor how to submit other branches if the assignment requires them.

Name the file clearly, for example biology_assignment-2_ai-transcript.pdf, and refer to it in the assignment as an appendix or attachment. If you must submit one Word file, put the transcript in a labeled appendix after your work. Keep its wording and turn labels.

Keep the original export unchanged. Put explanations, corrections, and any required redaction notes in a separate cover note. If the chat includes personal or unrelated material, ask your instructor how to provide the required record without sharing it unnecessarily. The assignment-transcript guide walks through submission.

Cite the use and check the underlying evidence

A transcript shows the exchange. A citation identifies the AI material or tool you used. Follow the citation style and disclosure instructions assigned for your work.

APA’s guidance treats a reference to a specific chat differently from a reference to the tool in general. See the Claude citation guide for APA, MLA, and Chicago patterns.

Write down the conversation date and model if you know them. The meta line shows the export date and model if known. A chat downloaded today may have happened earlier. Leave a missing model name unknown.

For claims about history, biology, or another subject, check the original sources. Acknowledging Claude does not make its answer evidence for a claim. Describe your checks when the assignment asks how you worked.

Check the files before uploading

Open the exact files you plan to submit. Check that the conversation is right, the equations are readable, and the appendix name matches your assignment. Add any required source documents as separate files.

If a share link is allowed, check the recipient’s access. Upload a file when the instructions ask for one. Keep a copy of everything you submit to record which version you handed in.

Questions

Can my teacher see my Claude chat?

It depends on how you share it: anyone with a public link can view the snapshot, while an email invitation requires a Claude account with the invited email address. Team and Enterprise sharing stays within the organization. Check your institution’s account rules too.

Can I make these exports on my phone?

No. Open the chat in Chrome on a computer to export it, then transfer the saved file to your phone however you normally move files.

Will a Markdown note include images I can open offline?

No. Markdown stores image links that open while you’re signed in to claude.ai. Save the image files separately if you need them offline.

Will the saved file update when I continue the chat?

No, a saved file does not sync with later messages. Export the conversation again after continuing it, and label the copies so you can tell which exchange each one includes.
