To back up your Claude chats, keep periodic account exports and save important conversations as readable files. Download useful artifacts and generated files separately. Store the copies somewhere private that you can access without Claude.
Keep a periodic account export
Claude’s official export gives you account and conversation data. Keep it alongside your readable chat files.
- Open Claude on the web or in Claude Desktop.
- Go to Settings → Privacy.
- Click Export data.
- Download the archive from the email while signed in to that account.
- Put the downloaded file in a dated backup folder.
The link expires 24 hours after delivery. For role permissions and the full procedure, see the account-history export guide and Anthropic’s export instructions.
Choose a schedule based on how much work you could afford to lose: monthly for occasional use, perhaps weekly for daily work. Request each export yourself.
Make a fresh copy before deleting important material, changing accounts, or leaving an organization, while you still have access.
Know what the archive leaves out
- Team and Enterprise members need an owner to enable personal exports, and those exports omit uploaded-file contents.
- Primary Owners use the organization export route rather than the personal button.
- The organization export leaves out Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF files Claude created.
- Material deleted before an organization export is requested won’t be included in that later archive.
See the individual export instructions and organization export documentation for each archive’s contents. Download needed attachments and artifacts separately.
For Claude Enterprise, ask your owner about retention settings that control how long chats, projects, and artifacts stay available. Follow the organization’s rules when storing copies of its work.
Save the useful conversations as readable files
Save a readable chat when you reach a decision, finish a research session, or complete a piece of work you expect to revisit. You don’t need a polished PDF of every abandoned prompt.
To save the open claude.ai conversation in desktop Chrome, use DocMyChat’s Export button beside Share. Choose PDF for a reading copy or Markdown for a .md file you can search and edit. The Markdown export guide shows how the file keeps code, formulas, and image links.
A website audit might need the final findings, the discussion behind an unusual recommendation, and the broken-link script. Save the conversation when the audit is finished, with a name you’ll recognize when explaining that recommendation six months later.
The export follows the branch currently on screen. To keep answers from different branches, save each while it is displayed and give the copies distinct names. One transcript won’t contain every retry.
Keep the actual files beside the transcript
Keep the script, chart, or document you’ll need to continue the work beside its transcript.
Use the extension’s Artifacts option to download a .zip of the chat’s artifacts and files Claude wrote. The archive has no folders and holds only their newest versions. Open the files you plan to reuse. See the artifact download guide.
You can also download individual outputs with Claude’s controls while the files are available. For native Docs, Slides, Design, Dashboards, and Motion artifacts, open the artifact’s own export or sharing controls.
A Claude Doc or deck published as an artifact is saved in the transcript as a titled link where it was made. Its contents aren’t included, so keep a separate copy of the artifact itself. The ZIP and appendix omit slide HTML and JSON files used only to build a published deck.
Keep uploaded source files in the project’s backup, or record where their authoritative copies live. Check especially for originals left on a temporary work computer.
Markdown image links need a signed-in claude.ai session. Save important images separately, then open them from the backup folder to check you have offline copies.
Save earlier artifact drafts before replacing your copies. The ZIP won’t supply them later.
Use private storage and names you can recognize
Choose an encrypted disk you control or a private cloud folder with appropriate access. For work material, use the location your organization permits. Keep another copy separate from the computer you normally use, so losing that device doesn’t also remove the only backup.
Account archives can combine private conversations with routine work, including older chats you’ve forgotten. Don’t place an archive in a public folder or attach it to a message to share one result.
Use a date, project, and purpose in your own filenames. For the website-audit example:
2026-11-02_website-audit_chat.md2026-11-02_website-audit_findings.pdf2026-11-02_website-audit_files.zip
Keep the official archive’s downloaded filename and place it in a folder named 2026-11-02_account-export. The folder records when you saved it.
Keep dated snapshots instead of repeatedly replacing one file called latest. Add a small project note describing what you saved and any known omissions, such as an image still awaiting download.
Open the copies before you rely on them
After saving, do a short check:
- Open the account archive to confirm it can be read by your archive utility.
- Open one saved transcript and find the final exchange you meant to keep.
- Check a table, code block, or equation if it matters to the work.
- Open the separate file you would need to continue the project.
- Confirm the second storage location contains the dated copies.
Check the actual contents: an archive that opens can still be missing files. Complete these checks before removing any source material.
Understand what you can restore
Anthropic doesn’t support importing the official export into another personal Claude account. Saved documents keep the content available to read and reuse. They don’t recreate the original chat list or turn a fresh conversation into the old one.
Eligible personal accounts can move into a Team or Enterprise organization through a separate process. That one-way migration closes the personal account when its data moves. It doesn’t restore a saved archive.
To continue a task elsewhere, prepare a short summary and the relevant files. See moving context to another chat for the handoff steps.
Questions
Can DocMyChat back up new chats automatically?
No. It exports one open chat or one reply at a time. There are no scheduled backups, bulk account exports, or automatic transfers to cloud storage.
Which date should I use when a conversation spans several weeks?
Use the date you saved the snapshot in the filename. If the conversation’s original date matters, record that separately in your project note so the two dates aren’t confused.
Do I need to save Claude’s thinking?
No. Include Claude’s thinking is off by default in the extension. Enable it only when that material belongs in the record you want to keep.
Do I need both PDF and Markdown for every chat?
No. Choose the format you’ll actually use: PDF for a stable reading copy, Markdown for text you’ll search or edit. Keep both when each serves a purpose, rather than doubling every file by habit.
