  3. Native PDF and Word export

Can Claude export to PDF or Word?

Yes, for Claude Docs and generated files. The available formats depend on whether you have a document, a deck, a legacy artifact, or a conversation.

Yes, Claude can export to PDF and Word from a Claude Doc, and it can create downloadable files in both formats. The Docs export menu saves the document you open. To keep your messages and Claude’s replies too, save the chat separately.

Match the format to the content

First, identify what you have: a Doc, a deck, a design, an older artifact, or ordinary chat messages.

What you haveClaude’s export optionsWhat the file contains
Claude DocWord, PDF, Markdown, Google DocsThe document
Claude SlidesPowerPoint, PDF, editable Google SlidesThe presentation
Claude DesignZIP, PDF, PowerPoint, standalone HTMLThe design in the selected format

See Anthropic’s artifact guide for native formats and file-creation help for generated documents.

Slides exported as PDF stay in slide form. If your recipient expects a written report with paragraphs, headings, and an executive summary, prepare that document before choosing PDF or Word.

Export an existing Claude Doc

Use the Doc’s own controls to change the format without rewriting the text.

  1. Open the Doc from its conversation or the Artifacts tab.
  2. Click Export in the document.
  3. Choose Word for a .docx file or PDF for a .pdf file.
  4. Open the saved file to check the result.

The Docs guide also lists Markdown and Google Docs in this menu. Choose Word for revisions, or PDF for reading, printing, or filing.

Check a wide table, the longest heading, and the last page before sending the document. If the original has several sections or tabs, make sure the exported file includes everything you meant to send.

Slides and Design have different output choices

Open the Export menu in the deck or design. The artifact guide lists the formats in the table above. Word is not one of the choices.

Choose PowerPoint or editable Google Slides when someone needs to work on a presentation. Choose PDF when you want to send the pages as they are. For a design, decide whether you need a static view or files you can work on before choosing a format.

For example, attach a landing-page mockup as PDF to a project proposal. A developer building it may also need the exported HTML or ZIP. Keep those source files with the proposal.

Download content from legacy artifacts

Claude calls artifacts made in chats before September 16, 2026, legacy artifacts. They still work. Look at the controls at the top of their panel to view code, copy content, or download it.

A downloaded .py or .html file contains source material. Renaming its extension to .docx or .pdf does not convert it into a document.

Use the download controls for working files, or collect the chat’s files with an artifact ZIP export. For readable text, put the material you need into a Doc or paste copied content into the Markdown-to-Word converter. Keep executable code and interactive content in their original formats too.

Ask Claude for a new document

Claude’s code execution and file creation feature can generate downloadable Word and PDF files. It is available on Free, Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, and Enterprise on the web, in Claude Desktop, and on mobile. Organization owners can control whether members can use it.

Describe the document, its audience, and what should go into it. For a client memo, you might write:

Create a Word document from the approved recommendations in this conversation. Include the cost table and open questions. Leave out the abandoned options, and flag anything you cannot verify.

Check the new draft against the conversation before treating it as final. Save the existing messages too for an exact record of prompts, replies, or corrections.

If you cannot create files, check Settings → Capabilities for Code execution and file creation, called Create and edit files in the updated layout. On an organization account, ask an owner about the setting before changing plans.

Preserve a conversation without rewriting it

To keep the surrounding chat as a PDF or Word transcript, use a conversation export tool. The conversation-export overview explains how that differs from an account archive.

With DocMyChat installed in desktop Chrome, open the conversation, click Export next to Share, and choose Word or PDF. Choosing Word downloads a .docx file. PDF opens a preview and Chrome’s print dialog, where you select Save as PDF.

The Word export keeps real headings, tables, and editable Word equations. The PDF export typesets equations and wraps long code lines. With Include artifacts enabled, artifact content goes into an appendix. Open the original chat to use interactive widgets.

Claude Docs and decks published as artifacts appear in the transcript as titled links where they were made, without their content. The appendix and ZIP leave out slide HTML and JSON files used only to build a published deck. Open the artifact itself and use its native controls to save the document or presentation.

Questions

Can I export a Claude Doc someone shared with me?

Doc editors can export shared Docs. If you cannot export one, ask its owner to check your access or send you the file you need.

Why did my animation export as a video?

Claude exports animations as MP4. A PDF can show a still page, but it cannot keep the animation moving.

Can I convert one copied reply without installing an extension?

Yes. The free Markdown-to-Word and Markdown-to-PDF tools on this site accept text copied from Claude and create the corresponding file in your browser.

Can I download a generated PDF in Claude’s mobile app?

Yes. Claude supports generated-file downloads on iOS and Android. Tapping Download may open the system preview or an app that handles the format, rather than saving to a desktop-style Downloads folder.
