To save a Claude chat to TXT, download it as Markdown, open it in a text editor, and save a separate .txt copy. Markdown is already plain text with light markup. DocMyChat has no TXT export button.
Start with the Markdown file
In Chrome on a computer, open the conversation on claude.ai and choose DocMyChat’s Export → Markdown. The Markdown export guide explains the file’s contents. Keep the original .md file when preparing a copy for another app.
Markdown uses ordinary text and punctuation to describe formatting. In a conversation export, you’ll see things like:
## You
Explain $x^2$ and use **bold** for the main point.
## Claude
Here is the explanation…
The hashes mark headings, asterisks mark emphasis, and dollar signs delimit the exported LaTeX formula. Saving the same text as .txt leaves those symbols in place. A different filename extension doesn’t turn a formula into a picture or remove Markdown notation.
Save a TXT copy in Windows Notepad
Open the downloaded .md file in Notepad. If headings look styled, use View or the status-bar toggle to switch to Markdown syntax view. Styling can hide the symbols without removing them.
- Choose File → Save As.
- Enter a new filename ending in
.txt, such assupport-chat.txt. - Under Save as type, choose All files (.) to use the filename you entered.
- Choose UTF-8 in the encoding control unless the receiving tool requires another encoding.
- Save the copy, then reopen it from the folder where you saved it.
Microsoft documents the filename and file-type controls and the encoding shown in the status bar. Check the encoding there after saving.
Save a TXT copy in Mac TextEdit
Work from a duplicate to protect the original when changing formats or editing.
First, choose the encoding used when saving in TextEdit → Settings → Open and Save, under Plain Text File Encoding. Apple’s guide describes this default. Choose UTF-8 unless the receiving tool requires another encoding.
- Open the duplicate
.mdfile in TextEdit. - Choose Format → Make Plain Text if that option appears. If the menu offers Make Rich Text, the document is already plain text.
- Hold Option and choose File → Save As.
- Give the copy a name ending in
.txtand choose where to save it. - Save the file, then reopen the saved copy.
Apple documents plain-text conversion and saving a copy. Giving a rich-text document a .txt name alone doesn’t make it plain text.
Copy from the page without an extension
For a short conversation, copy the page text yourself.
- Open the chat and click outside the message box.
- Select the text you need, or try Ctrl + A on Windows or Command + A on Mac to select all.
- Copy and paste the selection into Notepad or a TextEdit document in plain-text mode.
- Save it as a
.txtfile using the relevant steps above.
Before saving, remove any sidebar labels or navigation text that came along. Add speaker labels where needed. Compare the first prompt, a middle exchange, and the final answer with the chat. Don’t assume Select All captured a long conversation completely. If text is missing, copy smaller sections and compare them before joining them together.
Example: an older support portal accepts only TXT
Suppose a support portal wants a .txt attachment for a printer problem you discussed with Claude.
Keep printer-troubleshooting.md as the original. Save printer-support.txt using the steps above, then open that copy and check the printer model, error message, and final troubleshooting result. Remove unrelated discussion from the upload copy. Leave the speaker labels if you’re submitting the exchange itself.
Upload the copy you checked. If the portal provides a preview, check accented names and line breaks there too.
To continue the work in another AI, use the conversation handoff guide to prepare the context and next task.
Use the account export for scripts across many chats
If a script needs conversation data from your account, consider Claude’s official data export. Anthropic identifies exported conversation data as JSON in its education guide.
Follow the account-history export guide to request the archive. Inspect its files before writing a parser, rather than assuming a particular filename or field layout. DocMyChat exports one open chat or reply at a time and doesn’t process that account archive.
Questions
Can I remove the Markdown symbols?
Yes. Edit a separate copy, changing speaker headings to labels such as You: and removing emphasis markers around ordinary prose. Don’t delete every asterisk, hash, or dollar sign with a global replacement, since those characters may belong to code or formulas.
Which is better for uploading to another AI, Markdown or TXT?
Use a file type the destination accepts. Keeping Markdown’s headings and speaker labels can make the transcript easier to follow, even inside a .txt file. Add a short summary and the next task instead of expecting the transcript alone to explain what you want.
Does a TXT file have to be UTF-8?
No. The .txt extension doesn’t specify its encoding. Choose UTF-8 when the receiving tool requests it, and reopen the saved copy before uploading to check accented letters and other non-English characters.
