If you paste a Claude reply into Word and the formatting appears as asterisks and heading symbols, the Markdown hasn’t been converted. Run the copied text through the free Markdown to Word converter, or export the reply directly as a Word document.
Recognize formatting that remains as text
**final recommendation** uses Markdown markers for bold. A line starting with ## Findings marks a heading. If those characters remain visible in Word, the passage arrived as Markdown text without being converted.
Changing fonts won’t turn the markers into heading styles. Deleting them leaves you to rebuild the structure. Formula commands such as \frac{a}{b} are LaTeX source and need equation conversion.
Repair the text you already copied
The free Claude Markdown to Word converter runs in your browser and downloads a .docx with real equations, tables, and highlighted code. No extension is needed.
- Copy the affected passage, keeping its markers and line breaks intact.
- Open the converter.
- Paste the complete passage into its text area.
- Download the converted
.docx. - Open that file in Word.
- Copy the converted passage from Word and use it to replace the broken passage in your working document.
If you’ve edited the wording in Word, convert that edited version. Keep your working document open until you’ve checked the replacement.
Keep the markers: they tell the converter which words are bold and where headings start. If you’ve deleted them, restore them from an intact copy without overwriting your wording changes.
A repair example for a lab report
Suppose an explanation for a lab report appears in Word like this:
## Density
Use the **mass** and the **volume**.
$$\rho = \frac{m}{V}$$
- Record mass in grams.
- Record volume in cubic centimeters.
Convert the whole block, including the heading and formula delimiters. The intended result is a heading, two bold terms, an editable fraction, and a bulleted list.
In Word, click the heading and look at its style. Select the fraction to check that it’s an equation you can edit. Then compare the two bullet points with the source, including their units. If you remove only asterisks and dollar signs, the fraction command is still text and the heading still needs a style.
Check the wording and calculation separately. Conversion makes the passage easier to edit but doesn’t check whether its explanation or numbers are correct.
Use Word’s paste options for existing formatting
When the copied content already contains formatting, Word’s paste options let you decide what to keep:
- Keep Source Formatting keeps formatting applied to the copied text.
- Merge Formatting adopts the surrounding paragraph’s style while keeping some emphasis, such as bold and italic.
- Keep Text Only removes formatting.
Try Keep Source Formatting if a copied heading or bold phrase loses its appearance. In Word for Windows, paste the text, open Paste Options, and choose it. These controls manage existing formatting. They aren’t instructions to interpret literal Markdown characters.
Word for the web offers source formatting or text-only paste for outside content. Its text-only shortcut drops formatting, so it won’t rescue a table or bold phrase that you wanted to keep.
For a quick check in your version of Word, paste a short heading and a bold phrase into a blank document. If the markers remain visible after a normal paste, convert the passage. If the formatting appears correctly, check the more complicated parts before moving the whole answer.
Export the reply directly next time
DocMyChat’s Word export avoids the clipboard repair. It creates the Word document with real heading styles, lists, tables, and editable Office Math equations. It works on claude.ai in Google Chrome on a desktop computer.
- Open the conversation in Chrome with DocMyChat installed.
- Click the export icon under the reply you want.
- Choose Word.
- Open the downloaded
.docx.
For the whole conversation, use Export in the chat header next to Share. The file downloads immediately and is named after the chat and the export date. Choose a single reply when the final answer is all your document needs. Save the conversation when the prompts and corrections matter too.
The single-response guide covers that choice. Read the file’s first and last lines before adding it to your document.
Handle LaTeX as an equation
When a formula arrives as backslashes and commands, you have its written notation rather than an editable Word equation. Word export converts that LaTeX into native Office Math while building the document.
Word also has its own LaTeX equation input, which handles supported expressions inside an equation region. That feature doesn’t turn a whole pasted answer into a formatted document. For the steps to repair one formula, use the Claude equations to Word guide.
Questions
Does this happen on a Mac too?
If Word on your Mac shows the same literal symbols, use the same converter repair. For a direct export with DocMyChat, open claude.ai in Google Chrome on your computer. The extension doesn’t run in Safari.
Why does the same text look right in Google Docs?
Google Docs has a specific Paste from Markdown command that converts Markdown into document content. A successful paste in one editor doesn’t establish how another editor will handle the clipboard.
Can Word read a .md file?
Opening Markdown as text is different from converting it into headings and tables. For Word for the web, convert the text to .docx, one of its supported document formats. Renaming a .md file to .docx won’t convert it.
