To save a Claude chat with images inside the file, export it as a PDF or Word document with DocMyChat. Both include pictures you uploaded and image files Claude delivered. Markdown keeps image links that open while you’re signed in to claude.ai, so it isn’t an offline copy of the pictures.
Choose a format for the review
Choose PDF for reading and sharing, Word for a document you’ll annotate, or Markdown for text you’ll reorganize while handling pictures separately.
| Format | What happens to images | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Images are embedded. SVG keeps its vector format. Very large pictures may be omitted with a warning. | A reading copy that keeps pictures with the discussion | |
| Word | Images are embedded. SVG becomes PNG. | A document you’ll edit or annotate |
| Markdown | Images remain links to claude.ai that require sign-in. | Editable text with online image references |
Use the PDF export guide for print settings or the Word export guide for the editable document.
Save the conversation and check its pictures
Use Google Chrome on a computer with DocMyChat installed. Open the conversation on claude.ai. If you edited a prompt or retried an answer, open the branch you want.
- Click Export beside Share in the chat header.
- Leave Include artifacts on if you want artifacts in the appendix.
- Choose PDF or Word.
- For PDF, choose Save as PDF in Chrome’s print dialog and save the file.
- Open the saved document.
- Compare its important pictures and their surrounding messages with the chat.
The Word document downloads immediately as a .docx file. For PDF, a clean preview opens in a new tab before the print dialog. Look for warnings about omitted images, then check the saved file. Confirm that each chart appears with the passage discussing it.
Check small details too: field names and error messages in a screenshot or the axes, legend, and units in a chart.
Keep SVG charts and Mermaid diagrams readable
An SVG image keeps its vector format in PDF. In Word exports and with Copy, the same SVG becomes a PNG. Choose PDF when preserving the vector format matters, and keep the source SVG separately if you need to edit it later.
Mermaid diagrams are drawn as pictures in both PDF and Word. Check the arrows and node labels in the saved file before sending it.
Markdown stores a claude.ai address in image-link syntax. Moving the .md file doesn’t turn that address into a local picture. The Markdown export guide explains the file’s layout. Use PDF or Word when the pictures must travel with the conversation.
Example: review a checkout screen
Suppose you’re reviewing a checkout redesign. Your conversation contains two uploaded PNG screenshots, an SVG chart delivered as a file, and an interactive widget showing the revised checkout. You need to discuss the review without reopening every part of the chat.
Save the conversation as PDF. The uploaded screenshots let a colleague connect each criticism to the original screen, while the delivered SVG chart keeps its vector format. Confirm that both screenshots are present, especially if one is a very tall capture.
The interactive checkout’s visible state is part of a running widget. The export marks where the widget appeared and tells the reader to open the chat to use it.
Take a separate screenshot of the checkout state you want reviewed. Name it clearly, such as checkout-address-error.png, and keep it with the PDF. A short caption can identify the selected option and explain what the reviewer should notice.
Capture interactive charts separately
A chart delivered as PNG, JPG, or SVG is an image file. A chart displayed inside an interactive app is part of that app. DocMyChat embeds delivered image files in PDF and Word. For widgets, the export marks their place and points back to the chat. Save a separate screenshot to record the chart’s visible state.
To capture an interactive chart:
- Set the filters, date range, or other controls to the view you need.
- Make the labels and legend visible.
- Take a screenshot using your computer’s screenshot controls.
- Save it beside the exported conversation with a caption describing that view.
The screenshot records one state. If the discussion compares two filter settings, capture and label both. Keep the chat link for anyone who needs to change controls.
If a picture is missing from the PDF
Very large images may be left out of a PDF, and the extension tells you when this happens. Compare the warning with the source chat.
If the omitted picture matters, try a Word export and check that picture there, or keep the source image alongside the PDF. Give the separate file a recognizable name and mention it in your handoff.
For a missing interactive chart, follow the screenshot steps above. For a published document or deck, see the distinction below.
Keep attachments and published files separate
Keep separate copies of uploaded PDFs and spreadsheets when they’re part of the review. In Markdown, attachments are listed by filename. A listed name isn’t a copy of the file’s pages or sheets.
Published Claude Docs and decks appear as titled links where they were made. Their content isn’t included in the conversation export. A picture inside a published deck therefore isn’t covered by the rule for image files delivered in the chat.
For files Claude wrote, the Artifacts download saves their latest versions in a flat ZIP, with files at the top level. Keep the ZIP alongside the transcript when you need the source files. The slide HTML and JSON written only to build a published deck are excluded from the appendix and ZIP. That exception concerns the deck-building files, not every HTML or JSON artifact.
Questions
Does saving one reply include screenshots from my earlier messages?
No. The export icon under a Claude reply saves that reply alone. Export the whole chat when your uploaded screenshots and the questions around them provide necessary context.
Can I recover my original uploaded images from the Artifacts ZIP?
The ZIP contains artifacts and files Claude wrote. Keep your original uploads separately when you need the source image files.
Will a saved file update when Claude revises a chart?
No. Exports don’t sync with later changes. Export again after the revision, and give the saved copies names that distinguish them.
