To save a Claude research report, choose PDF for reading, Word for editing, or Markdown for notes. Use a Claude Doc’s Export menu, a generated file’s download control, or a single-reply export for a chat answer. Open the saved copy and check its source links before sending it.
Find the finished report
Research investigates a question through searches that build on one another. Start it with + → Research. Claude’s unified interface uses that control but has no separate web-search toggle. See the Research help page and interface-rollout guide for the controls in each version.
Start with the finished answer. An early plan may already have headings and useful links, so check that this is the report you requested.
Choose the route for your report:
- A long answer in the chat: save that reply.
- A Claude Doc in the artifact panel: use the Doc’s own Export menu.
- A downloadable report file: download it directly, without pasting it back into the chat.
Export a report that is a chat reply
In desktop Chrome, open the report’s conversation. DocMyChat adds an export icon under each Claude reply, next to Copy.
- Find the final report reply.
- Click its export icon.
- Choose PDF, Word, or Markdown.
- For PDF, select Save as PDF in Chrome’s print dialog.
- Open the saved result and compare its beginning and ending with the reply.
- Check the source links using the procedure below.
For a reading copy, choose PDF to open a preview and Chrome’s print dialog. Use Word for an editable report to revise the language, add comments, or combine it with your analysis.
Markdown suits a notes folder or text-based workflow. A single-reply export has a title, a “Claude reply” meta line, and the answer, with no turn heading. The Markdown guide covers the rest: formulas stay as LaTeX, and image links require a Claude sign-in.
The reply’s icon leaves out the surrounding discussion. To keep your request and later corrections, save the conversation separately using the header’s Export button. See the single-response guide for that distinction.
Use Claude’s export when the report is a Doc or file
For a Claude Doc, open it and choose Export. Its documentation lists Word, PDF, Markdown, and Google Docs as destinations. Save the conversation separately to keep the surrounding questions and replies.
Download an existing .docx or PDF from the conversation, as described in Claude’s file-creation guide. Check the file, especially if it was created after the report first appeared in chat.
You can ask Claude to turn a report into a document with the same headings and source list. Compare the new version’s caveats, table rows, and references with the original.
In a vendor comparison, losing a caveat such as “available only on the annual plan” can change the recommendation.
Check the source links in your saved copy
Anthropic describes Research citations as links to original material. DocMyChat keeps ordinary text links clickable in PDF, Word, and Markdown, along with the link back to the chat.
Check the copy you intend to send:
| Saved format | What to check | If a source link needs fixing |
|---|---|---|
| Open a source link in your PDF reader and check the source list | Add the verified URL to an editable copy and make a new PDF | |
| Word | Follow the link from the .docx, including after your edits | Correct or add the source title and URL beside the reference |
| Markdown | Read the link’s destination in the text and open it | Replace an incomplete reference with a verified source URL |
Check at least one source link near the beginning and another near the end. Then check every link supporting a claim you plan to quote or rely on. A working link to the wrong page is still a problem.
If a source is missing from your reference list, open it from the original report and copy its URL. Don’t ask a model to guess addresses from publication titles.
Keep the question, date, and scope with the report
A report called research.pdf is hard to interpret later. Add a short context note, either in the editable document or beside the untouched original:
- The question you asked.
- The date the research ran.
- The date you saved this copy, if different.
- The region, time period, or other limits of the request.
- Any later corrections you made.
For example, “Compare booking systems for a two-room UK studio using the public prices available on November 2, 2026” records the market, business size, and pricing date. “Best booking software” leaves those boundaries unclear.
Use a filename such as 2026-11-02_studio-booking-research.pdf. Keep the original and edited copy separate so readers can distinguish Claude’s answer from your revisions.
Check the evidence before reusing the conclusions
Open the primary sources behind important statements. Check that each supports the specific claim, that dates match, and that figures use the same units or pricing period.
Pay particular attention to a neat comparison table. One row may use a monthly price while another uses an annual-billing equivalent. Follow the links and label the difference before circulating the result.
If Research used connected work sources, review the report for internal information before sending it outside the intended audience. Exporting the final reply removes earlier conversation turns, but it doesn’t remove confidential details already incorporated into that reply.
Questions
Does saving the report also save the websites it cites?
Don’t treat a report file as an archive of the cited websites. Keep the source URLs, and save any needed source documents separately if you’re allowed to keep them.
Can I save a generated research file from my phone?
Claude’s native file-creation feature supports mobile, including downloadable files. Use the file’s download control. DocMyChat itself runs in desktop Chrome, not the mobile app.
Why can’t a colleague open a link to an internal source?
A copied URL doesn’t give the recipient permission to access the original document or service. Check that they have access, or provide an authorized copy through your normal work-sharing process.
Will the saved report change if I rerun the research?
A saved file is a copy from that point in time. Save a new dated version after the update and check its claims and sources again.
