Save a Claude chat in Zotero
Attach a PDF to the paper you’re discussing, or paste a useful reply into a note. Keep your checks beside the saved conversation.
To move a conversation from Claude to Zotero, save it as a PDF and attach it to the relevant research item. Use a Zotero note for one answer you want to edit. Keep the original paper’s record alongside the chat.
Attach the PDF to the paper you’re discussing
File a conversation about one paper under that paper’s Zotero item. Give the attachment a clear title, such as “Claude discussion — methods questions,” to distinguish it from the paper itself.
- Open the conversation on claude.ai in Google Chrome on your computer.
- With DocMyChat installed, click Export beside Share.
- Choose PDF to open the preview and Chrome’s print dialog.
- Select Save as PDF and save the file.
- Drag the PDF from your file browser onto the relevant item in Zotero’s center pane.
- Open the attachment and check the first and last messages.
Dropping a file onto an existing item creates a child attachment, as Zotero’s attachment guide explains. For a discussion covering several papers, drop it onto a project collection or empty space in the center pane to add a standalone attachment. Zotero may attempt to identify the PDF and create a parent record, so inspect any result.
The PDF keeps typeset formulas, tables, highlighted code, and ordinary text links. Compare important charts and images with the chat. Very large images may be omitted with a warning. The PDF export guide covers print settings and layout.
Paste one reply into a Zotero note
Use a note for questions, an outline, or an explanation you’ll annotate. Include the prompt if the answer needs that context.
- Select the paper’s item in Zotero.
- Click New Note, then Add Child Note.
- In Claude, use DocMyChat’s export icon beneath the reply and choose Copy.
- Paste the reply into the Zotero note editor.
- Add the chat URL and a label identifying the copied answer.
DocMyChat puts formatted text and Markdown on the clipboard. Check headings, lists, tables, and formulas after pasting. If a table loses columns or formulas appear as code, keep the PDF for that passage and point to it from the note.
Without an extension, select and copy a short passage from the chat, then paste it into the note. Put your corrections under a separate heading to distinguish them from Claude’s wording.
Zotero saves note text as you type. For a discussion spanning several sources, choose New Standalone Note from New Note instead.
Find the conversation through full-text search
Zotero indexes text embedded in PDFs automatically while idle. Choose Everything in the search box to search indexed PDF text alongside metadata and notes. A title search won’t find words buried in a reply.
Try a distinctive word from the transcript. If the conversation doesn’t appear, select the attachment and inspect Indexed in the right pane. Check that you can copy readable text out of the PDF, then use Reindex Item from its right-click menu if needed.
Zotero’s search settings control how much text is indexed. For a long transcript, try words from both the beginning and the end to check the coverage.
Keep the discussion beside the original evidence
Suppose you’re writing a literature review and discussing Attention Is All You Need with Claude.
Keep the original paper’s record and PDF. Add your discussion as another attachment, titled “Claude discussion — attention paper — saved 2026-11-03.” In a child note, list your questions, the passages you checked, and anything unresolved.
If Claude proposes a sentence for the review, find the supporting passage in the paper. Record the section or page beside your check. Note any rejected interpretation if it explains a revision.
Verify every source Claude mentions before adding it to the library. Open the publisher’s page or repository record. Match the title, authors, date, and identifier, then read the material supporting the claim you plan to use.
Zotero recommends saving from the source’s main page, such as a journal article’s abstract page. Use the Zotero Connector there after checking the source. The research-report guide covers preserving a report and its source links. The research workflow guide covers the wider project record.
Sync the attachment as well as the note
Zotero separates data sync from file sync. Notes and bibliographic records travel through data sync. Attached PDFs need file syncing through Zotero Storage or WebDAV, with WebDAV limited to personal libraries.
Dragging and dropping a file adds a stored copy. A linked file points to a location on your computer and isn’t transferred by Zotero file sync. Use stored files unless you already maintain a separate linked-file setup.
After syncing, open the PDF on your other computer. Seeing its name confirms only that the record arrived. Open the pages before relying on them away from your main machine.
Create a citation record when the chat is the source
When you quote or analyze the conversation itself, follow your instructor’s or publisher’s requirements. Use the Claude citation guide for the required reference pattern before choosing Zotero fields.
Zotero’s item-type guide describes Instant Message as a message from a chat service. It may fit if its fields and citation output match your required reference. Manuscript is another adaptable type for unusual unpublished material. Neither is a universal AI citation choice.
A standalone PDF lacks citation metadata. To make a record for it, right-click the attachment, choose Create Parent Item, then Manual Entry. Enter the actual conversation details and inspect the citation in your chosen style.
Keep the paper’s record intact. Create a separate chat record without replacing the paper’s authors or title with AI details.
Questions
Can I add several sources Claude mentioned at once?
After checking the sources, paste their identifiers into Zotero’s Add Item by Identifier box, separated by spaces, commas, or line breaks. Zotero’s identifier guide lists supported identifiers, including DOIs, ISBNs, and arXiv IDs. Review the resulting records.
Do I need a Claude plugin for Zotero?
You don’t need one for the PDF and note methods here. DocMyChat exports the open conversation in desktop Chrome, and you add the result to Zotero yourself. DocMyChat doesn’t sync it to the library.
Will later replies appear in the saved attachment?
No. The export is a copy of the conversation at that point. Export again after a useful follow-up and label the new attachment so you can distinguish it from the earlier record.
Can I use the export date as the conversation date?
Only if they are actually the same date. DocMyChat’s meta line records when you exported the file. Record the conversation date separately, and leave uncertain details marked as unknown.
