Claude for lawyers: Keep drafts and research records
Keep the editable draft, the saved exchange, and the reviewer’s checks together in the approved matter folder.
For legal work in Claude, keep a Word review draft and a dated PDF of the conversation in the approved matter folder. Name both by matter and review stage. Verify every case or statute Claude cites against authoritative, current text before relying on it, and follow applicable firm, bar, and court rules.
Start with the matter’s rules
Confirm which Claude account, material, browser extension, and download location your firm permits. Resolve required client permissions or disclosures through the firm’s process before entering matter information.
ABA Formal Opinion 512 is one example of professional guidance. It discusses independent review, firm AI policies, and checking applicable court rules. Use the requirements governing your work, including matter-specific instructions.
Agree on what to keep: the draft, prompts and corrections, source documents, or a review note. Follow the firm’s retention instructions. Label a selected answer clearly so it won’t be mistaken for the full exchange.
Make the review copy in Word
On claude.ai in desktop Google Chrome, DocMyChat’s Word option downloads an editable .docx immediately. The header’s Export button saves the open conversation. The export icon under a reply saves that answer alone. The Word export guide covers the controls.
For a draft memo or chronology, export the reply you intend to revise. Keep the conversation separately when prompts and corrections belong in the matter record.
- Save the download to the approved matter location.
- Create a working copy with a draft label and version number.
- Add the reviewer, purpose, and unresolved questions at the top.
- Review wording, factual assertions, and authorities before changing the draft’s status.
The Word file has editable headings, lists, and tables. Keep generated wording identifiable until the responsible lawyer has checked it. Use the client-deliverable workflow when preparing a reviewed document for delivery.
Keep a dated PDF of the exchange
Use PDF for a reading snapshot. Choose PDF, then Save as PDF in Chrome’s print dialog. The PDF export guide covers the print settings.
The export includes the chat title, turn labels, message count, and a chat link. Its metadata records the export date and the model if known. That date is not the conversation date. Record a known conversation date separately, and leave the model name unspecified if it is unknown.
The export follows the branch currently shown on screen. After a prompt edit or retried answer, choose the branch you mean to keep. Don’t label it as a history of every alternative.
Open the saved PDF and compare its first and last messages with the chat. Check tables across page breaks and any required appendix. Follow the matter’s instructions for preserving the original export, with corrections in a separate note or working document.
Name files for the matter and review stage
Follow the firm’s convention, using a matter identifier, subject, and file role. Use the export date for a chat snapshot and a version number for an edited document.
For the illustrative matter M204, names could be:
M204_2026-11-03_claude-chat_export.pdfM204_chronology_draft_v01.docxM204_chronology_reviewed_v02.docx
Use a matter number instead of unnecessary client details. Keep the export and working copy distinguishable even outside their original folder.
Add a short matter note recording which chat or answer was saved, who prepared it, and what still needs review. Label later snapshots clearly and follow the firm’s rules for keeping earlier copies. Point reviewers to the source-document versions actually checked.
Check every authority outside the chat
For each cited case or statute, independently find the authoritative text and check its current status. Read the passage in context. Verify the citation, quotation, pinpoint reference, jurisdiction, and relevant version. Use the firm’s approved research process to check later developments.
For services governed by Anthropic’s commercial terms, factual assertions in outputs require independent accuracy checks. Asking Claude to confirm its own citation doesn’t supply the underlying authority.
Keep a verification note beside the draft: proposition, source checked, review date, reviewer, and unresolved issues. Mark authorities as unchecked until verified. A clickable source link only starts the check.
Compare summaries of matter documents with the originals, including names, dates, amounts, and quotations. Separate sourced facts from assumptions before handing the draft to the next reviewer.
Separate export processing from Claude’s data policies
DocMyChat builds the document in your browser. No DocMyChat server receives the chat. It reads only the selected chat when its menu or popup opens, using your existing claude.ai session. The privacy policy describes this processing.
Claude’s data handling is separate. Anthropic’s privacy policy distinguishes personal-data processing from content handled on behalf of business customers, which is governed by customer agreements.
As of November 2026, Anthropic’s commercial training guidance says chats and coding sessions aren’t used for training by default. Exceptions include Development Partner Program participation, explicitly submitted feedback, and other explicit training opt-ins. The page covers Team and Enterprise among its commercial products.
For consumer accounts, Anthropic’s training guidance says chats and coding sessions may be used for model improvement when users permit it, explicitly submit feedback, or otherwise explicitly opt in. Conversations flagged for safety review may be used to improve Usage Policy detection and enforcement, including training safeguards models.
Training and retention are separate questions. Anthropic’s commercial retention guidance says commercial chat products keep conversations so users can continue them. Check the rules for your chat product separately from the API’s retention terms. Have the firm’s administrator confirm the agreement and settings that apply to your account.
Check the actual download folder and who has access to it before saving matter material. Browser processing doesn’t determine who can open the file or what a synced folder uploads.
Example: hand a chronology to a reviewer
In this illustrative example, an authorized chat helped assemble a chronology from documents the team was permitted to use. The final answer lists events, while earlier turns show date corrections.
Save the final reply as the M204 Word draft and the required exchange as the dated PDF. Add original-document references to the working copy and mark entries awaiting checks.
Suppose review reveals that one entry combines two events. Correct the Word copy and describe the change in the review note. Update the filename to the reviewed version only after the required checks and approval. Keep source documents in their usual matter location.
Questions
Can I export all the chats for a matter together?
DocMyChat exports one chat or one reply at a time. Save each required conversation separately and organize the files under your matter’s naming rules. There’s no bulk export or automatic sync.
Can I export from the Claude desktop app?
No. DocMyChat works on claude.ai in Google Chrome on a computer. Use an account and browser setup your firm permits.
Will the export include a Claude Doc created in the chat?
A published Claude Doc appears as a titled link, without its contents. Save the document separately with its own Export button when you have export access and need it in the matter folder.
