Claude chat history missing? Check these places

Check the account and the full history before assuming a conversation is gone. Then check projects, service status, and how the chat was saved.

If your Claude chat history is missing, check the signed-in account and organization, then the full chat list and any project you used. An empty sidebar doesn’t prove deletion. Next, check service status and whether the session was incognito.

If the conversation is still open in another tab, copy the useful text before refreshing or signing out.

Check the email and selected organization

Start with the email address you used for the missing conversation. Check that you’re using it on each device.

One email address can have both a personal account and a Team or Enterprise account. Follow Anthropic’s account-switching instructions:

  1. Click your initials in the bottom-left corner.
  2. Look for the check mark beside the active account.
  3. Select the personal account or organization where you did the work.
  4. Check its conversation list.

If you recently moved your personal account into an organization, look there. The chat list can take time to fill after migration, while title search works immediately. If chats still seem missing after the move, Anthropic advises signing out, signing back in, and searching again.

Open the full history and the project

Go beyond the recent conversations in the sidebar. Anthropic’s web instructions say Chats and tasks opens the full chat history. In the new unified experience, the conversation list is called Recents.

Search for a distinctive word from the chat title, then try a shorter fragment if needed. The chat-search guide covers the options.

If the conversation belonged to a project, open Projects and check that project. For a shared work project, check Your projects, Organization, and Shared with you. Check archived projects too: their conversations remain accessible.

As of November 2026, some accounts’ projects have moved to a new projects beta. If yours have moved, look under Projects at claude.ai/code or in the desktop app’s Code tab.

Suppose “Renewal interview questions” is missing from your personal sidebar. You remember writing it in the company’s “Customer research” project. Switch to the company organization, open that project, and look for the title before assuming the chat is gone.

Check for a Claude service incident

If the whole list suddenly looks empty or the page won’t load, open the Claude status page. Look at claude.ai and any relevant incident description.

If an active incident affects access, follow its updates and try again after it’s resolved. A service report cannot tell you whether a particular conversation was saved or deleted.

Check whether you used an incognito chat

Claude’s incognito mode has a ghost icon and an Incognito chat label. Those conversations aren’t saved to your history, can’t be converted to regular chats, and can’t be reopened after you close them.

Anthropic retains incognito data for 30 days by default, or longer under applicable Enterprise retention settings. That doesn’t make it available again in your sidebar. Team and Enterprise incognito chats are included in organization exports available to owners, separately from your personal history view.

If the session is still open, copy what you need before closing it.

Check deletion and Enterprise retention

For consumer accounts, deleting a conversation removes it from history immediately, with back-end deletion within 30 days. Don’t treat that timetable as an undo window.

If you use Enterprise, ask an owner whether a custom retention period applies. Standalone chats follow the chat retention rule. Chats inside projects follow the project’s retention rule, and deleting an expired project removes its chats. Anthropic says data permanently deleted under these rules can’t be recovered.

An older export or saved document may contain the wording you need. Look through existing backups before reconstructing an important decision from memory.

Report an unexplained disappearance

If those checks don’t explain the problem, use Get help in your account menu. Anthropic’s support guide explains the assistance available for each plan.

Include your account email, organization, approximate chat date, title, and project name. Add the conversation URL if you saved it, any error message, and details of when you last opened the conversation. Say whether one conversation is missing or the whole history is blank.

Describe what happened: “The chat was visible yesterday in this project, and today its link gives this error.”

Keep a separate copy from now on

Once you find a conversation worth keeping, export it while you can open it. In desktop Chrome on claude.ai, DocMyChat saves one chat or reply as a PDF, Word document, or Markdown file. The chat-export comparison helps you choose a method.

Also keep periodic account-wide data exports. Anthropic’s export instructions cover the web and desktop routes and the owner permission needed for Team and Enterprise member exports.

Choose a private location and a filename with the project name and the date you saved the chat. Open the file to confirm it contains the exchange you wanted. Follow the backup routine for artifacts, attachments, and later snapshots. DocMyChat exports manually, without scheduled backups or automatic sync.

Questions

Can support restore a deleted Claude chat?

Report an unexplained disappearance through Get help, but don’t rely on restoration. Anthropic’s consumer deletion timetable describes back-end deletion within 30 days, not a promised recovery period.

Do I need separate Claude accounts for the app and website?

No. Anthropic says you can use the same account across devices by signing in with the same email address. If the histories differ, compare the email and selected organization on each device.

Does turning off memory stop Claude from saving the chat?

Turning Memory off for one conversation still leaves it in your chat history. Incognito chats work differently: they aren’t saved there.

Can I import an account export to merge my histories?

No. Anthropic doesn’t support importing an export into another personal account or migrating data between personal accounts. Keep the archive as a separate copy of the data.
