If Claude artifacts are not downloading, open Chrome’s More → Downloads. The file may already be there, or Chrome may show why it stopped. Then work through the controls, permissions, and fixes below.
1. Check whether the file already arrived
Look in Chrome’s download tray beside the address bar or its full Downloads list. See Chrome’s download guide.
- Open More → Downloads.
- Find the transfer from your latest attempt.
- Open its folder if the transfer completed.
- Open the file to check what arrived.
Use the folder Chrome shows, which may differ from your default Downloads folder. Check any PDF tab too: Chrome can open PDFs instead of downloading them automatically.
If your lesson worksheet opened in a PDF tab, use the viewer’s Download control to save it. Then open the saved file and check its contents.
2. Check the artifact type and selected format
Open the artifact. Export saves Claude Docs as Word, PDF, Markdown, or Google Docs. Slides and Design offer other formats. For Dashboards and Motion, check the controls on the artifact itself.
Legacy artifacts created in chats before September 16, 2026, use controls at the top of their panel for copying or downloading. Look there if an older item has no Export menu.
If you get worksheet.html instead of a PDF, check the selected format and artifact type. The source file may have downloaded correctly. See the native format guide for a way to save the document you need.
If you cannot find or open the artifact, start with where Claude artifacts are saved. Download settings cannot restore access.
3. Follow the browser’s actual error
Read the message in Chrome’s Downloads list. Chrome’s error guide explains what each message means.
| Chrome message | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Download blocked | Read the security explanation and ask your administrator about restrictions on a managed device |
| Disk full | Make enough storage space available before retrying |
| Insufficient permissions | Choose a folder your account can write to |
| Needs authorization or Forbidden | Confirm that you are signed in and have permission for the source file |
| File missing | Return to the original item to check whether the remote file is missing or has moved |
For an interrupted transfer, check your connection and use Resume if Chrome offers it. Fix the problem named in the error, then retry once.
Keep security protections enabled.
4. Check permission for multiple downloads when relevant
If the first file arrives but later related downloads do not, check Chrome’s automatic-download setting. This permission covers several related downloads from one site.
- Open Settings in Chrome.
- Select Privacy and security → Site Settings.
- Open Additional permissions → Automatic downloads.
- Check the permission for the downloads you started.
See Chrome Help for these settings. Limit any change to the trusted site you are downloading from, and follow your organization’s settings on a managed browser.
5. Isolate an extension or browser issue
Try another browser if Chrome lists no download. Google recommends comparing browsers to help tell a browser problem from a page problem.
- Open the same conversation in another browser or Claude Desktop.
- Sign in to the same account.
- Try the artifact’s native download or export control.
- Compare the result with Chrome.
If the native control works elsewhere, check Chrome. If you suspect an optional download-management or privacy extension, open More → Extensions → Manage extensions and turn it off. Retry, then turn it back on. Change one extension at a time to see which affected the result.
Use Claude’s own controls for this comparison. Test DocMyChat only in desktop Chrome.
6. Check for a Claude incident
Open the Claude status page and look for a claude.ai incident. If one matches the timing and behavior you see, wait for an update before regenerating your work.
A normal status page does not rule out an account or file problem. Note whether one artifact or every download fails so support can narrow it down.
7. Save content you can still open
If you can see the artifact’s text or code, use its copy control if available, or copy the text into an editor. Keep the filename and check the first and last lines. Copying text will not keep every image, layout, or interactive behavior.
For code and other files available in the open chat, DocMyChat’s Export → Artifacts collects their newest versions in a ZIP. See the artifact ZIP guide. The ZIP does not duplicate older drafts or recover deleted or inaccessible files.
In a chat export, a Claude Doc or deck published as an artifact appears as a titled link where it was made. Its content isn’t included, so use the artifact’s own controls to save it. Slide HTML and JSON used only to build a published deck are omitted from the appendix and ZIP, so those files won’t appear there after another attempt.
If you need the conversation as well, a Markdown export can include artifact content in an appendix. Its image links require a signed-in Claude session, so save images separately if you need offline copies. Check the saved result before closing the original.
8. Send support the useful details
If downloads still fail, use Get help from your Claude account menu or the Help Center messenger. See Anthropic’s support guide for your plan and organization role.
Include the artifact type, expected format, browser or app version, time and time zone, and the exact error you saw. Say whether a file appeared in Chrome’s Downloads list and whether the native control worked in another browser. Keep follow-ups in the same support conversation so those results stay together.
Questions
Why did removing a download from Chrome’s list leave the file on my computer?
Chrome’s download history and the downloaded file are separate. Removing the history entry does not delete the local file. Check the folder where you saved it.
Can I download artifacts from all my chats in one ZIP?
DocMyChat exports the artifacts from one open chat at a time. It does not offer a bulk download across your account.
Will renaming an HTML file to PDF fix it?
No. Changing the filename does not convert the file. Choose PDF from the artifact’s Export menu if it offers that format, or use a tool that converts its content to PDF.
Should I use Try fixing with Claude for a download problem?
Use Try fixing with Claude when the artifact itself produces an error you want Claude to diagnose. For browser download permissions or a missing file, start with the checks in this guide.
