Claude artifacts are saved in your Claude account. Look in the Artifacts tab or the conversation where you created them, as shown in Anthropic’s artifact guide. They do not automatically appear in your computer’s Downloads folder. Download or export an artifact when you want a local copy.
Start in the Artifacts tab
Look for the title of your document, deck, or design in Artifacts, even if you do not remember its chat.
- Sign in to the account you used to create the work.
- Open Artifacts in the sidebar.
- Open the item that matches the work you need.
- Check its contents before exporting it.
If you have personal and organization accounts, check which one you are viewing.
Your Claude Docs stay in your account and appear in Artifacts. Use Export for a local copy.
Return to the conversation for context
Find the exchange that created the artifact. Anthropic’s artifact guide shows how to open it beside the chat.
Suppose you asked for a lesson plan, shortened it for a different class, and added a worksheet. Use the chat to tell the revised plan from the first draft and find the separate worksheet. Before exporting, check the timing and make sure the canceled exercise is gone.
Save the exchange too if you need a record of the instructions and corrections. The conversation-export guide explains your options.
Recognize older artifacts by their controls
Artifacts made in chats before September 16, 2026, are “legacy artifacts.” They still work but have different controls, as the artifact guide explains:
- Docs, Slides, and Design artifacts use Export, with formats appropriate to each type.
- Legacy artifacts have controls at the top of the panel for viewing code, copying, and downloading.
On an older artifact, look for the controls at the top of the panel if you cannot find Export. A source file such as worksheet.html can be the correct download, even if you expected a PDF.
See Claude’s native PDF and Word exports for formats by type. If an artifact opens but will not save, follow the download checks.
A published link is another way to reach the work
The artifact-sharing guide describes two kinds of access. Ordinary shared artifacts require Claude sign-in. Publicly published legacy chat artifacts can be viewed without an account.
On individual plans, older artifacts use Publish, which also adds them to Artifacts for access outside the chat. If someone invited you to an artifact, keep the invitation or bookmark its URL.
A link is not an independent backup: permissions can change. Unpublishing a legacy artifact revokes access, and Anthropic says you cannot then republish that same artifact. Save any local copy you are allowed to keep before unpublishing it.
Shared Docs require a Claude account, and Team and Enterprise Docs cannot be shared outside the organization. Follow their sharing rules, even if you have published legacy artifacts publicly.
Save copies before deleting source material
Before deleting an artifact’s source chat, save a local copy and open it. Check the version and contents before removing the chat.
For Enterprise work, check your organization’s rules. The Enterprise retention guide describes separate artifact retention, with exceptions for Research reports and some older artifacts. The unified Enterprise experience guide also treats generated files and artifacts differently. Keep your own copies for a personal account instead of relying on these organization-specific rules.
Deleting a Claude Doc itself is permanent. The Docs guide says there is no trash and shared access disappears too. If you are cleaning up a workspace, export the documents you want to keep and open those copies first.
Keep the files and the explanation you need
For Docs, Slides, Design, Dashboards, and Motion, open the artifact itself to use its own export or sharing controls. For reusable code or other source material, keep the original files. A readable appendix helps you review the work, while a source file lets you work on it.
DocMyChat offers an Artifacts ZIP for the open chat in desktop Chrome. It keeps Claude’s filenames and includes the newest version of each artifact or file. The artifact download guide explains how to save them together.
The ZIP has no folders. A file named src/parser.py becomes src parser.py at the top level, so look there for files whose names included a slash.
In a chat export, Claude Docs and decks published as artifacts appear as titled links where they were made, without their content. Slide HTML and JSON files used only to build a published deck are left out of both the ZIP and appendix.
For the discussion plus other artifact content, export to PDF, Word, or Markdown with Include artifacts enabled. Those artifacts go into an appendix, with notes showing where they appeared in the conversation. A Markdown copy works well for text notes, though its image links still require a signed-in Claude session.
Give your local folder a name such as 2026-11-02-lesson-plan and keep the worksheet, plan, and conversation together. Open the documents and source files you need before considering the folder complete. An export tool cannot recover content that is no longer accessible in Claude.
Questions
Do Claude artifacts expire after a fixed number of days?
Don’t assume one expiration period covers every artifact. Check your organization’s retention policy for Enterprise work, and save local copies of anything you need to keep. A deadline from an account-export email or a sandbox lifetime is not an expiration date for every artifact.
Does an artifact ZIP include every earlier draft?
DocMyChat’s ZIP contains the newest version of each artifact or file. It does not include duplicate copies of earlier drafts. Save any older draft you need separately while you can still open it.
Can I find artifacts from the mobile app?
Yes. Open the Artifacts tab in Claude’s iOS or Android app to view and edit artifacts. Use the web app or Claude Desktop to change sharing settings.
Why are there two similarly named files in the ZIP?
When two files have the same name, DocMyChat keeps both using names such as notes.md and notes (2).md.
