To copy a Claude response with formatting, select a short passage on the page or use DocMyChat’s formatted Copy option for a whole reply. If you already have Markdown text, use the destination’s Markdown conversion or turn it into a document with a free converter.
Check one heading before copying everything
Paste a short section into your destination. Include a heading, some bold text, and a list.
If text pasted with Claude’s Copy button shows **owner** or ## Agenda, those Markdown markers haven’t become formatting. Choose a method below before copying the rest. If the text looks right, check the list structure and continue.
For text already in Word with visible symbols, follow the Word formatting repair guide.
Select a short passage on the page
Manual selection is useful for a paragraph or a few bullets. The browser’s default copy action copies selected content, so choose the boundaries carefully.
- Open the reply you want to reuse.
- Drag across the displayed text, from its first word to its last.
- Press Ctrl + C on Windows or Command + C on Mac.
- Click in the destination’s document or message body.
- Use normal paste, then compare the first and last lines with your selection.
Avoid text-only paste when you want formatting. In Word, Keep Text Only discards formatting and turns tables into paragraphs.
Your selection may leave out the question that makes the answer understandable. Add a context line if needed. Make sure every bullet is complete and you haven’t included part of another reply.
Save separate attachments as files. Copying a displayed filename doesn’t give you its contents. For a long answer with tables or code, use the whole-reply method below.
Copy one whole reply with formatting
DocMyChat’s Copy puts formatted text and Markdown on the clipboard together. The receiving app uses the representation it understands. This option is always free and works on claude.ai in Google Chrome on a desktop computer.
- Open the conversation in Chrome with DocMyChat installed.
- Find the finished answer you want.
- Click the small export icon under that reply, next to Claude’s own Copy button.
- Choose Copy, labeled for Google Docs.
- Paste into the destination’s editing area.
To include the questions and corrections too, use Export beside Share in the chat header. The single-response guide explains that scope choice.
Compare a heading, a nested bullet, and a table row if present. The destination’s editor and paste settings still determine the result.
Choose the paste mode for your destination
Choose a paste mode that accepts formatting, then inspect the elements below.
| Destination | Formatting the app supports | Paste choice and check |
|---|---|---|
| Google Docs | Headings, bold, italics, strikethrough, and links through its documented Markdown features. | Paste a formatted copy normally. For Markdown text, right-click and choose Paste from Markdown. Check one heading and one list. |
| Word | Source formatting through Keep Source Formatting in Word for Windows. | Choose that option for formatted content. In Word for the web, inspect table styling and list indentation, which can change. |
| Emphasis and lists in an HTML message, as documented by Outlook. | Use a formatted compose window. In Gmail, turn off Plain text mode. Inspect the draft before sending. | |
| Notion | Blocks and formatting controls for headings, lists, and code. | Paste into the page body, then inspect the resulting blocks. For saved Markdown, file import supports headings, lists, and code blocks. |
| Slack | The formatting toolbar supports emphasis, lists, quotes, and code. | Inspect the draft and apply toolbar formatting as needed. With Format messages with markup enabled, pasted messages appear as plain text. |
The Google Docs transfer guide covers longer documents. The email guide helps you choose between a pasted excerpt and an attachment.
If dense tables or formulas need too much repair in a message composer, send a short explanation with a document attached.
Convert Markdown you already copied
If the copied text still has Markdown markers, the free Markdown to Word converter can turn it into a .docx. It runs in the browser and creates real tables, editable equations, and highlighted code.
Paste the text into the converter, download the file, and open it. Work in that document or copy a section into your destination. Keep the markers and line breaks intact until conversion, since they carry the structure.
For a reading copy, the Markdown to PDF converter uses the same converters and saves through the print dialog. Choose Word for editing and PDF for reading or sharing.
Example: send a kickoff agenda
Suppose the final reply contains a kickoff agenda with one heading and three actions: design confirms the page list, development reviews the signup flow, and content supplies the missing text. Each team name is bold, and a reference link follows the list.
You only need those actions in an email. Select the passage, copy it, and paste it into a formatted draft. Add an opening sentence explaining the meeting’s purpose. For the whole reply, use the reply export icon’s Copy instead.
Check that all three actions are present and each team name belongs to the right task. Open the reference link. If the list arrived as one paragraph, restore three bullets with the composer’s formatting controls before sending.
Keep your added explanation outside the copied agenda so you can compare the original wording.
Questions
Why do formulas paste as code in Google Docs?
With DocMyChat’s Copy option, formulas arrive in Google Docs as LaTeX text. For editable equations, export to Word and open the .docx in Google Docs. Word export creates native Office Math equations.
Can I copy several replies together?
Use the chat header’s Export menu and choose Copy for the whole conversation. To assemble selected answers, copy the replies separately into your working document. DocMyChat handles one chat or one reply at a time.
Does DocMyChat’s formatted Copy work on a phone?
No. The extension works on claude.ai in Google Chrome on a desktop computer. Open the conversation there to use its Copy option.
