You can save a Claude incognito chat’s text by copying it into a separate document while the conversation is open. Save and open that document before closing the session. These temporary chats stay out of your history, and once closed, they can’t be reopened.
Copy the useful answer first
Keep the chat open and use another tab or app for the copy. If Claude shows a Copy control for the reply, use it, paste the text into your document, and compare the result with the answer on screen.
You can also select the text yourself. The browser’s default copy action copies the selection.
- Open a blank document or note in another app or tab.
- Select the answer from its first word to its last.
- Copy the selection and paste it into the document.
- Save the document with a name you’ll recognize.
Include the question if it explains the result. A list headed “Option two” needs the options it refers to.
The single-response guide covers other ways to keep an answer from a regular chat.
Keep the questions and corrections too
To keep the whole conversation, select and copy its text, including your messages. For a longer exchange, work through one question and answer at a time so you can check where each section starts and ends.
Add You and Claude labels if the speakers aren’t clear. Keep the turns in order and put your own comments below the transcript.
Include corrections that changed the answer. A revised deadline or assumption belongs beside the updated result, so a later reader doesn’t follow the superseded answer.
If exact wording matters, keep the copied exchange. A summary can introduce it but won’t preserve the original questions and answers word for word.
Open the saved document before leaving
Open the note or file from the place where you saved it while the incognito chat is still available for comparison. Check the parts you would struggle to reconstruct:
- Read the first and last lines of each copied section.
- Find the final correction and the answer that follows it.
- Compare any table rows, code indentation, numbers, or links you need.
Keep each link’s address as well as its label. If a table loses its columns, repair it while you can still see which values belong together.
The formatted-copy guide explains how to handle pasted headings, lists, and Markdown. Keep the complete text first, then work on presentation. Leave the original wording available while you edit a working copy.
Example: keep an interview practice script
Suppose you use an incognito chat to practice an interview introduction. You first ask for two minutes, then change the limit to 60 seconds. Claude supplies a shorter script and three points to emphasize.
Copy the final script into a note called “Interview introduction — 2026-11-03.” Add “60-second version” above it and keep the duration correction beside the script.
Open the saved note and check the closing sentence and all three points. Put your revisions underneath the copied script.
Understand history and retention
Incognito conversations aren’t added to Claude’s memory. Anthropic states a default retention period of 30 days, with longer retention possible under an Enterprise organization’s custom setting. That period doesn’t give you a way to reopen a closed chat.
Your saved document is a separate copy in the location you choose. If the discussion was personal, avoid leaving that copy in a shared project folder by accident.
If you’ve already closed the chat, start with anything you previously saved. Label a reconstruction from your own notes so you don’t mistake it for the original exchange.
Use a regular chat for work you’ll resume
Choose a regular conversation when you expect to return for revisions or need the discussion in your history. If memory is enabled, turn off Memory in the + menu before sending the first message in a new chat. Claude won’t use or add to memory in that chat. Your other chats keep their memory settings. The conversation stays in history, and past-chat search can still find it when available and enabled.
For ongoing work, decide which conversations deserve a separate saved copy. The backup guide covers that routine.
Questions
Can I convert an incognito chat into a regular chat?
No. Anthropic’s incognito guide says you can’t convert it or save it to your chat history. Keep the text in a separate document.
Do incognito chats appear in an organization’s data export?
Yes. Team and Enterprise organization exports include incognito chats. They’re also included in the Enterprise Compliance API.
How can I send the saved answer to someone?
Send a separate document or paste the relevant passage into your message. Review that copy first, especially if the original exchange includes personal details or unfinished drafts.
